Some Form/Kind/Sort/Type Of...

Farscape One

I played this game with VOYAGER, and thought it would be fun here, too.

My wife and I are currently rewatching ENTERPRISE. (First time for her.) VOYAGER ended up with only 16 episodes out of 172 to NOT use 'some form/kind/sort/type of' phrase. I thought it would be fun to catalogue that for this series, as well.

We just finished "BREAKING THE ICE"... so far, not only has every episode used the phrase, but it has been used multiple times per episode. Can this series hit double digits without using the phrase?

(Or a more shocking possibility... can ENTERPRISE use the phrase more than VOYAGER, despite it having 74 less episodes?)

It sure is.

I was telling my wife that while there are times it's perfectly fine to use, there's other really egregious uses.

"They are using some sort of force field."
"They are playing some kind of game if cat and mouse."

Just say they are using a force field, or playing a game of cat and mouse.

One thing she did point out about ENTERPRISE is that of all the shows, this one could use it a lot and be legit since it takes place in the 22nd century and our heroes don't know nearly as much as the 24th century counterparts.

It's a solid argument. Still will be interesting to see the results.

Wll, I got not one, but TWO episodes! "SHUTTLEPOD ONE" and "FUSION" both are absent the phrase!

Though ironically, the first time VOYAGER had an episode absent the phrase, it was at the beginning of season 4... with ENTERPRISE, it's been used so often per episode, it might have actually surpassed the season 4 mark over there.

We have another one! The fourth episode to not use the phrase... "SINGULARITY"!

Honestly, it's quite shocking this one doesn't simply because of the unknown radiation that affected the crew. Even the name of the episode seems like a guarantee it would be uttered.

But that goes to show you... a well written script and idea does NOT need to use that phrase. Even if the episode all but demands it.

(I will also say that "SINGULARITY" has always been a season 2 favorite of mine. Very creepy atmosphere, creepy music at the right moments, and awesome visuals of the trinary star and the asteroid field. Chris Black definitely did a superb job writing this one.)

they are seeking new life and new civilizations, etc. every new thing must be categorized as some kind of something to attempt to understand it based on antecedents.

Archer on having a ship designer as a father "This is a kind of career opportunity for close family members"

Transporter room guy "Enterprise, what we got back, didn't live long, as a form of flan.. fortunately."

Dr. Crusher "I see a lamp.. some kind of Celtic ghost boyfriend."

It's a fun exercise, as the phrase was rarely used in the early TNG years and DS9.

It's like watching birds... you know they are there, but they are still fun to see.

Make that three in a row! "CEASE FIRE" also us absent the phrase, bringing us a total of 7 to date.

ENTERPRISE is on fire!

We got to 10! "THE BREACH", absent the phrase.

I'm also hoping it will at least equal VOYAGER, especially considering how many season 2 so far has gone without the phrase.

We are at double digits now, anyway... far better than the previous series at this point.

We are at 12 now, because "COGENITOR" and "ANOMALY" are absent the phrase!

ENTERPRISE may actually hit 17 episodes... more than VOYAGER could muster is 7 years.

My wife and I have marathoned the rest of season 3. Some great news on the phrase front.

"TWILIGHT", "NORTH STAR", "CHOSEN REALM", "E2", and "ZERO HOUR" all do not contain the phrases. That brings our total to... 17 episodes! ENTERPRISE has officially surpassed VOYAGER, and with a full season to go, no less.

Woohoo! Enterprise wins...something!

Whoever keeps looking, we could set the kind of record that will Never Be Surpassed! Haha, Enterprise Immortal!
