Some Fantastic Four Reboot news

Jessica Alba I thought was horribly miscast as Sue Storm...the others were fine. I thought Chris Evans brought a lot of fun to Johnny and was one of the few bright spots in the original films. Micheal Chilkalis (sorry if I spelled his name wrong) was great as Thing. Didn't think much of Reed even though he was also in "King Arthur" I mentioned already that I thought Julian McMahon was underused as Doom.

I consider myself a FF fan and like most people disliked the first two films.

I wish people would stop repeating this lie.

"Most people" did NOT dislike the first two films. Both did respectable box office, but weren't the breakout hits the studio had hoped for.
Hopefully this reboot will be a little more in tune with the comics in terms of portrayal of the characters.

The portrayal of the F4 was spot on. Reed the Absent Minded Professor, Sue the "den mother", Johnny the "hot shot" and Ben the dependable friend turned rock creature.

If you're referring to Doom, get the frak over it. You were never going to get "Prattling Dolt!" Doom in a LA movie. The Doom we got was still powerfully portrayed, and his origins were still tied (albeit more directly than in the comic) to Reed Richards, giving him a foundation for his hatred of the team.

The casting looks like if true is on the right foot this time.

And the 2nd Big Lie. There was nothing wrong with ANY of the casting. Chiolkis (sp?) and Evans particularly stood out as having their characters down VERY well.

Whoa, I was already afraid of four new reboots that you think are going to be fantastic. :wtf:

and Alice Eve would be fantastic (pun intended) for Sue.

Haha, LOL. A moderator who linked a forum member to a web page that has an animated gif that insults people who write "(pun intended)". So essentially, the Moderator just called the poster a "Dumbass", but in a roundabout way.

Also (again my knowledge is limited, so correct me if I'm wrong), but isn't Dr. Doom's backstory in the comics somewhat similar to Destro or the version of The Joker that fell in the acid and was therefore permanently scarred?

What happened was that Reed and Doom were college rivals. Doom was working on a device (what it did I don't recall), and Reed found a flaw in his calculations and told Doom that if he tried to use the device as it was it would backfire badly.

Doom, in his arrogance, didn't listen and sure enough, when he went to turn on the device it blew up in his face.

That's the explanation for both his scarring AND his hatred for Reed.

If that's the case, the face of the actor playing him shouldn't really matter, since his silver face wouldn't be a mask that he takes off. What's more important would be the actor's physical presence - his body language, movements, and voice.

It depends on the needs of the script. If they have pre-accident Doom, then they'll need to consider "face".

Sure, if you're okay with pigeonholing each character with a single quality. But Reed isn't just an absent-minded professor. He's one of the world's greatest scientists, provably smarter than Doom from the beginning, which means he should NOT be one of Doom's employees. He's also the group's strategist and tactician, with brilliant leadership abilities. I can see him taking a while to find his feet as a leader, but that jock/nerd speech he made to Andre Braugher should have been in the first movie.

As for Sue... the business about disrobing in public -- multiple times! -- was just juvenile and cringe-worthy. Otherwise, I don't have a problem with the way the character was written. Her evolving relationship with Reed was convincing. My primary objection is just the actress, as others have said. Appearance and acting skills. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Doom... I dunno. This portrayal didn't impress me, but I've never quite been able to explain it in words. Maybe if they'd retained more of a European flavor to the character.

On the other hand, Ben and Johnny were great.

I loved the first FF movie and liked the second one. They didn't do anything wrong.

Of these two it's gotta be Rhys-Meyers in keeping with the Hollywood mini-tradition - going back to Corman's version - of casting a Brit for Reed.

Not pigeonholing, but basing the character around their "role" or primary attribute type in terms of character dynamics. And the actors were able to nuance that quite nicely I thought.

He was never an "employee" of Doom's, he was an independent researcher who came to Doom looking for backing for his experiment.

A subtle running joke it certainly was not, I agree.

A matter of taste, I suppose. I thought she had a wholesome quality and a sweetness of spirit that played well.

I think, whether or not anyone wants to admit it, some part of us wanted the "full-metal jacket", Darth Vader version of Doom.

On the other hand, Ben and Johnny were great.

Agreed.

Bah! Too much text. One photo of a cat with a pithy caption would have sufficed.

This thread just convinces me that casting the roles with name-brand actors is a bad idea, since nobody can think of anyone who works except January Jones as Sue, and she's already got her superhero gig (the wrong one, dammit!)

Damian Lewis isn't a name. He had a show called Life that lasted 2 seasons on NBC, he could work, but what do I know. Not much I say, not much.

Jessica Alba I thought was horribly miscast as Sue Storm.
True but I get why they did it.
The way the make it in the comics, it's like Sue Strom is the hottest women in Marvel comics. It seems like everyone that sees her, wants her. So Alba was basically cast to be what she is, T&A.

I thought it was Maddox's whole shtick to say in 10,000 words what a normal person could say in 50.

^ i could say it in four: you're. not. funny. asshole.

RE: F4, i liked both the movies. they were fun. and they really ought to bring back Chiklis and Evans, but i read Thing's going to be CG this time...

Even if the Thing's gonna be CG they'll have to mocap a real person. It's still not possible, as far as I know, to do a convincing humanoid CG character without using mocap.

Hmm, forgot that one.

SUE was working for Doom. Maybe you mixed the two up.

Having her be something in her own right outside of being "Reed's girl" I thought added to her character.

I think, whether or not anyone wants to admit it, some part of us wanted the "full-metal jacket", Darth Vader version of Doom.
Probably!

"PRATTLING DOLT! YOUR LAUGHTER MOCKS THE MONARCH OF LATVERIA! SO SAYS DOOM!!!"

Yet she was able to very much take it and run with it. She showed Sue as being very smart, not afraid to stand up for herself when she needed to, but also very femme, which not a lot of Marvel Women are portrayed as being.

They need to CG the Thing. They've taken the makeup, animatonics and suits as far as they can go with this kind of character, and done some really impressive stuff - the Thing from the first two movies, Hellboy, even the Thing from the Corman movie in a low-budget get-a-load-of-that way. But CG is the best approach for this.
