Perhaps, but if the facilites are percieved to be sub-standard it's news. If they meet or exceed the standard there is no news.

Do we know the quality of the facilities aren't just par for the course? I don't remember seeing any videos of the facilities from say... London.

Usually watch stuff like curling, but never followed it religiously. Opening ceremony usually is pretty interesting.
However I will not be watching a single frame from these games simply because of the oppressive and inhumane ways the Russian government are treating their own people. I want no part of their shit.
One of the complaints reporters at Sochi have mentioned is signs telling people not to flush toilet paper down the toilets but to place it into trash cans instead.
