Sochi Olympics

Anyone planning to watch? What are your favorite events?

Does anyone think there is a chance of these games going smoothly? The press coverage has been overwhelmingly negative.

Winter Olympics are my favourite. That said, I am boycotting the coverage. I can't stand Putin and hope the event is a miserable failure.

I love the Winter Olympics. The hockey, the curling, the skiing and snowboarding. These Olympics are going to be... interesting.

I might watch the Hockey, but I can't say I'm looking forward to these games. The only storylines I've heard have all been bad.

I'm with the majority, this thing is going to be a fiasco of staggering proportions.

I only hope that the problems are limited to poor execution of the games and not bloodshed; given the region I'm not too optimistic about that.

As always, the opening ceremonies should be interesting to watch, but I don't actually follow the Winter Olympic events. Too boring, imho.

I'll probably watch a bit of it. And of course this is the 90th Anniversary of the Winter Olympic Games, the fiurst being held in France in 1924, the reason of course for it being 90 years and not 88 years, is that upuntil 1992 the Summer and Winter Games where in the same year, then it was switched so the Winter games would fall between the summer games. So we had another Winter games in 1994 only 2 years after the 1992 games.

And I can see this thread being moved to the Sports forum where we already have a Winter Olympics thread.

The actual GAMES might go smoothly, but from what I keep hearing, the facilities to house the players and writers are, to put it mildly, sub-par. In the same sense that the Pacific Ocean is 'a pond'.

Do we know the quality of the facilities aren't just par for the course? I don't remember seeing any videos of the facilities from say... London.

Perhaps, but if the facilites are percieved to be sub-standard it's news. If they meet or exceed the standard there is no news.

But if the goal of a blogger/reporter is to put a negative spin on these Olympics it becomes "news" again.

I'd just hazard a guess that London was never like this. Or this. Or this.

One of the complaints reporters at Sochi have mentioned is signs telling people not to flush toilet paper down the toilets but to place it into trash cans instead.

Edited to add - Mr Laser Beam's links mention the toilet paper.

The facilities in London didn't have packs of stray dogs roving around and through the building while being hunted by doggie death squads, didn't have construction workers sleeping in your still incomplete rooms, didn't have non-working elevators and poorly working toilets, didn't have yellow water which burns your face come out of faucets and showers, etc. etc. etc. The athlete accommodations are supposed to be slightly better than the journalist ones, but it doesn't bode well when you house the people who are going to write about the games in something that looks like it belongs on the set of Enemy at the Gates.

I hope it goes well, because I don't want to see the athletes suffer because of Putin's assholery (or Chechen terrorists), but I'm not optimistic. I'm sure they'll try and make the best of it, though.

Usually watch stuff like curling, but never followed it religiously. Opening ceremony usually is pretty interesting.

However I will not be watching a single frame from these games simply because of the oppressive and inhumane ways the Russian government are treating their own people. I want no part of their shit.

Same here. As much as I want the athletes to succeed, it's all marred by Russia's hateful laws against gay people.

That's more to do with the smaller diameter of plumbing than anything else. Pretty common thing in some Mediterranean countries too. Even in better hotels.

I will most likely watch the opening/closing ceremonies, the best parts about Olympics, IMHO:)
I doubt I will watch the sports itself much.
