So who is your favorite cop?

I've been caught up in watching Homicide re-runs for a few weeks now and it has got me thinking about all of the great cop shows I have enjoyed over the years. And since I have had insomnia the last few nights I've been pondering who is my favorite cop of all time?

For me it's Frank Pembleton from Homicide. I love the way Frank attacks his job. He puts 100% of himself into avenging the dead. And his mastery in "the box" is outstanding. Also his interaction with the other detectives especially his partner Tim Bayliss is always captivating. It doesn't hurt that he is played by one of my favorite actors Andre Braugher.

My favorite actors currently playing a TV cops are Gary Sinise and Chris Noth, but they elevate their thinly-written characters so I wouldn't call either of them my favorite roles.

Watching Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce doing their things in L.A. Confidential was just pure awesomeness, especially since it was before Crowe and Pearce hit it big.

First cop that came to mind was Lennie Briscoe, of Law & Order.

After that, Columbo and Bobby Goren run a pretty close second. OH, and almost forgot: Jim Ellison of The Sentinel.

4. Charlie Chan - not on TV, but there are so many Charlie Chan movies that there are many TV cop shows that have not lasted as long.
