So when's the DVD set coming out?

Nothing on B&N. Nothing on Amazon. A Google search uncovers DVDs already for sale that are probably either pirated or outright fraudulent.

Anybody here know anything?

Based on previous releases of Discovery, I'd wager sometime around November (maybe later d/t COVID delays).

Best buy would have their preorders up by late summer or fall usually.

Nothing official has been released yet but I am sure they will announce some kind of release later in the year.

Yeah, it's too early for an announcement. Based on Disco, they announced in the summer the DVDs/blu-rays would have a November release. Then factor in the pear-shaped year we're currently in, and there's no reason to expect anything on this front at the moment.

Hopefully sooner rather than later. Really want to watch this show, but not willing to manage another streaming service!

I don’t see the difficulty. At this point you can subscribe for a free trial or a small monthly fee, watch the show, then unsubscribe. A Blu-ray boxset would be higher quality if can wait for it, though.

That's not the point. At least for some if not many of us who do not want >x number of services.

In this day and age people are unaware of the existence is Blu-Ray. There are at least two possibilities for this. The latter may have something(s) to do with streaming, if nothing else...

But it is the point since Lt. Munro wants to watch the show but something mysterious about the number of services is stopping both you and him, and I’d like to find out what exactly. Where is the logistical problem in subscribing for a free trial or paying a small month’s fee in order to watch ten episodes in HD? It’s not like it requires a two-year contract with early-cancellation penalties. I’m not even suggesting anyone should rewatch it via streaming once the show is released in more consistent HD on Blu-ray, since PIC is fine but not that good and a single run-through should be enough initially.

Delivery formats are simply tools of the day to be applied towards the timeless pursuit of watching what you want and when you want it in the best available quality. I use everything from DVD to streaming to 4K disc. Since Netflix began temporarily omitting highest-quality streams in Europe I’ve been watching more discs instead, but I still want to follow Westworld on HBO GO. Would I rewatch it in the same way? Of course not, I’ll wait for the 4K disc release. What about shows in HD that aren’t streaming everywhere in Europe? Some of them I have to buy on DVD if there is no Blu-ray release. PIC is available on Amazon Prime, but I just unsubscribed because it’s over. And so on, whatever fits the requirements.

Wife and I are currently watching TNG (her first time watching it). We'd like to watch PIC together at some point and I'm hoping that a Blu-Ray version is available by the time we do get around to watching it. A Blu-Ray version should have superior image and sound quality to any streaming service and we'd actually own a copy of the content -- not need to pay a monthly fee whenever we want to re-watch it.

Ok, but that’s slightly different: you’re a fan of the franchise but not so much that you’d need to watch a new iteration as it’s being released or even soon after it’s done. Whenever a season appears in a finalized boxset is a great time to watch it. However, if you simply refer to the number of streaming services then it sounds more like a protest vote against their proliferation given how easy it is to subscribe for just as long as you need to.

People seems to have no problems to buy and own more than one DVD or blu-ray, but to pay for more than one streaming service of even get a free trial? All hell breaks loose. It's so weird!

I'm going to buy the DVD set after I've just watched the entire ten episode series in two days! And unlike DSC which I wasn't keen on I quite liked PIC! :techman:

I hope we get a blu ray steelbook - hopefully we'll hear in the UK around the same time as the US, although that being said there's still no indication when, or even if, Short Treks is being released over here.

When you buy a DVD or Blu-Ray, you pay a one-time, upfront fee for the content and then it's yours to watch in perpetuity. With a streaming service, you need to continue to pay a monthly fee to access the content. I also like the enhanced quality of Blu-Ray vs streaming.

Don't get me wrong, I have a Netflix sub and an Amazon Prime sub (though I don't pay for Prime because of Prime Video) and they are great because of the broad diversity of content. But paying for CBS All Access just for Star Trek when I'd much rather own the Blu-Rays/DVDs anyway doesn't make sense for me.

Not gonna knock anyone's preferences for media consumption. Some people just really like having the physical copy, too. I have switched to streaming 100 percent for the convenience, but I rather miss displaying stacks of cds and dvds. :)

You wouldn’t be paying for it right now during a free trial, but OK, it’s clear you just don’t need to watch a new Star Trek show as it’s being released or shortly after. A lot of fans do, but many wouldn’t remain subscribed longer than it takes to watch the ten episodes once or twice, since they’ll probably be out on Blu-ray eventually.
