So what will fandom do when Star Trek XI is a huge hit?

Either love it if they, well, love it or cry if they hate it and vow never to watch the sequals

Really! I wasn't aware of the fact that it was EVER 'cool' to be a Trekkie....

So I don't know what this 'again' business is all about!

Sure. When TWoK came out in 1982, it was popular with both Trek fans and non-Trek fans alike. The same with TVH (even moreso). Nobody was embarrassed to say "I'm going to see...(those films)".

...However I suppose, these films could fall under ancient's "less uncool" remark.

Believe me, I lived in those times too, and it just made Star Trek fans a bit more accepted in the less nerdy circles; but it was NEVER 'cool' to say "I'm gonna go see Star Trek TMP/TWoK'.

You hung with the wrong people then. I found other Trekkies in both junior high and high school. There were many smart people who liked Trek back then. (original Star Trek.)

We all had a blast. Never gave a damn what others said and I doubt they even knew we were Trek fans. Not because we were ashamed of it (I never was, and carried my Trek books openly in school), but because we had a large, fun group and didn't need to bother with the others.

If we're lucky, it will be like Doctor Who:
The revival will be faithful and nostalgic enough that most old guard fans will embrace it as a continuation rather than a remake. The new fans will embrace the new and flashy version, while developing a new found interest in classic Star Trek. Everybody will be happy.

If we're unlucky, it will be like Battlestar: Galactica:
It will be a complete and total remake. Many old time fans will despise it because the ship looked too bulky, McCoy wasn't crotchety enough, Spock's ears were too pointy/not pointy enough, and Checkov kept pronouncing Wessel with a 'v'. The new fans will embrace it as superior and the two fanbases will loathe one another.

If we're REALLY unlucky, it will be a standard Hollywood bastardization of an old tv show. God help us all.

Excellent breakdown, AG.

But regardless of whether the movie flops or tops, I expect the internet to explode. You all better do your part, because I don't want to be disappointed!

So far the bitching has been very mild, considering they've recast Kirk. I was expecting far more deeply philosophical rants. Where have all the nutcakes gone?!

No doubt. Trekkies have the reputation of being the most insane fan group either on or off the Internet, but the reaction to the new movie has been tepid beyond belief. Where are the PineNotKirk websites? Where are the scores of angry posters decrying this remake as there was during the genesis of RDM's BSG?

It's kinda boring here, actually. Come on, people, liven it up a bit!

"Either love it if they, well, love it or cry if they hate it and vow never to watch the sequals"

They will break that vow. They will see the sequals, see the toys, read the prose, and the comix. They will play the video games and the rpg. And they will still come...to complain tm. :D

The aging rank-and-file of Trek fandom are becoming mellower and more restrained in their dotage?

Okay, maybe the tight control over the release of information is keeping the fanbase in check; the Bad Robot folks could be committing all manner of horrific blasphemies even at this very hour, and we just aren't aware of it because the production is buttoned up like the Manhattan Project. Things could get much livelier as more information is allowed to trickle out...

I expect that when the first official images come out there will be an Internet bloodbath...

The teaser trailer is exactly four weeks away. Rumors are it features the new Enterprise, though probably not in a fully visible finished state.

I might go into hideing after the Teaser Trailer hits.

Might save me a headache or two or a hundred or more.
