so what was wrong with Entourage S5?

Just got done watching Entourage S5 - I'd heard it was bad or at least not up to par, but I have no idea how or why. Did people not like Vince having to struggle? That was great stuff and long overdue. Unless he has some challenges thrown at him, how can Vince ever develop as a character?

They can't just keep focusing on Ari, Drama and Lloyd - funny characters, sure, but not ones who are ever going to have an 'arc.' Nobody wants Drama to change! Vince is a much better candidate for an arc at the core of the story. The others' antics will always be there. This show is evolving - isn't that good?

Was is the shrooms-in-Joshua Tree episode? Turtle's somewhat-boring storyline with Meadow Soprano? The Gary Cole stuff (not that interesting, but hey it's Gary Cole!)? The cliched (but still funny) dictatorial/insane German director?

I think it does merit that Emmy nomination, but not in the comedy category. It's definitely more a drama than comedy now - always was on the fence - but that doesn't make it a bad series. I didn't realize until it was over that I hadn't actually laughed that much. I was too busy being entertained.

One of my favorite parts was Vince doing increasingly absurd scenes "emoting" while hanging from a tree. If Vince and his quest to prove himself as an actor is really going to be more of the central focus of the story, then they need to show him performing more. I still have no real idea whether Vince is supposed to be talented or not. I'd guess that the intent is that he is, but they need to prove it to the audience.

And I dunno about anyone else, but when Vince threw the phone after the call with Gus Van Sant, I just about cheered. It's about time he really takes off the straightjacket as a character. I'm looking forward to seeing Scorsese in this show when the DVDs come out next year. :D

I probably enjoyed S5 more than any other year. I thought it was more interesting, funnier, and the characters became more sympathetic (I thought they were worthless douchebags for the first 2-3 seasons). Was this the season with Drama's French girlfriend? I watched 4 and 5 at once so they held together for me.

I think folks just decided that it was time to start criticizing the show. I enjoyed season 5 as much as the others and am starting off liking this season as well.

Metacritic gives season five a score of 71. That's just two less points than the score it gives for the third season of 73 (strangely, the fourth season is not scored). Doesn't look like a radical shift among critics.
