So what do you think happened to all the stuff Chekov left behind?

Tribble puncher

Captain
Captain
In STIV, when Chekov is captured by the United States Navy and Interrogated, They confiscate his phaser, I.D. badge thingy, and his communicator. He escapes without retrieving any of it. What do you supposed happened to it? Surely even if it wasn't working due to the Radiation....shrug.... Surely his gear would have been studied and found to be advanced. Which brings me to the next question, why did he bring all that stuff? They really only needed the collector and one communicator, why even beam in at all? They showed the particles could be transported... Why not have Scotty just beam them directly out of the reactor into the collector?

Starling got ahold of it. He probably runs one of the companies that is a government contractor.

The implication in The Voyage Home is that non-functioning equates to completely worthless, on any grounds, without a scrap of knowledge to be gleaned from it. What's more, Chekov was viewed as being a "retard" and it is heavily implied that his 23rd century trinkets were considered by the Navy people as probable toys, anyway. However, I'm pretty sure this incident was referred to later in STAR TREK novels, where it somehow changed history. Not that I read these novels, it's just been brought up before and I forget the way "they" worked it into their story. But STAR TREK IV made it quite clear that Kirk & Co. were not above changing history to $ave the Whales, but they were above wearing STARFLEET insignia, as they were walking the streets of San Francisco. That's how the crew of the HMS Bounty chose to set their priorities and it is in the final thing ...

I guess the question would be whether or not the weapon worked again once it was away from the ship, or did the background radiation permanently break it

I always scratch my head about how people will go after the flimsy plot devices in less popular movies (or the more recent films) and not point out stuff like this in TVH.

Even worse than leaving stuff behind was the fact that they took a woman out of her time and brought her forward into the 23rd century. Imagine the ripple-effects THAT would have on the fabric of the universe.

To think that Archer risked death to retrieve much less sophisticated material.

Would it? Stipulate that the gadgets aren't working as a whole since otherwise the communicator would contact whatever Vulcan survey ship was in the area and we'd have quite the historical mess.

Would 23rd-century technology even be recognizable to circa 1985 research? We're talking about technologies based on scientific principles we do not have, quite likely relying on materials we do not have (e.g., dilithium), manufactured by processes we almost certainly do not have except in the loosest cartoon form. If it doesn't seem to do anything, and it seems to be made of surprisingly heavy pieces of plastic for a toy, and early investigations don't turn up much of anything that makes sense, why would it get investigated further?

Now, how a lunatic got into a highly secured area on an aircraft carrier would be investigated, as well as how he got broken out. That would have real-world consequences in how people do things.

I actually dealt with this in one of the Eugenics Wars novels. Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln stole Chekov's gear from the U.S. Military before any harm was done . . ..

Now, that was the hell of a spoiler :p, but that won´t keep me from buying your Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan novels. I wish Cross Cult would refrain from postponing them again and again. I asked Markus Rohde if we (the Khanatics) can expect it until Christmas 2015. With luck, we can .

Oops! Sorry about that!

Trust me, there's a lot more going on in the books than that! :)

I believe it unconditionally, especially as a guy named J.Archer in the Cross Cult forum is drumming up business for Khan for month (years?)

I'll have to find your books, Greg. :) I need more fun stuff to read!

That would be a good explanation.....I've been meaning to read the books actually...An alternate theory I had was Chekov inadvertenly started a goverment agency that would eventually morph into Section 31.

...because in the filmed universe, it did not matter--i.e., change or influence history. I'm guessing it simply vanished into irrelevance, much like McCoy's communicator in "A Piece of the Action" (no matter the theories shared between the Big Three), or the dismantled landing party gear left on Ekos from "Patterns of Force".

Even worse than leaving stuff behind was the fact that they took a woman out of her time and brought her forward into the 23rd century. Imagine the ripple-effects THAT would have on the fabric of the universe.
Didn't someone suggest Taylor did not leave any signifanct mark in her time that her leaving the 20th century would not make a difference? Or was that the characters from TNG's "The Neutral Zone" episode?

I still remember rewatchng TVH on VHS, just to make sure I was remembering correctly that Chekov left that stuff behind, and being relieved to discover that, yes, I could do something with that . . ..

Umm, this is being pointed out. And not for the first time.

:)
