So what do you think happened to all the stuff Chekov left behind?

I always scratch my head about how people will go after the flimsy plot devices in less popular movies (or the more recent films) and not point out stuff like this in TVH.

Even worse than leaving stuff behind was the fact that they took a woman out of her time and brought her forward into the 23rd century. Imagine the ripple-effects THAT would have on the fabric of the universe.

You've heard of cowboy diplomacy? This is cowboy time travel. Kirk and company were the original Space Cowboys.

I get why he had a communicator and a disrupter... but why would he carry round his Starfleet ID? Just seems a bit odd, Uhura and Scotty removed any emblems from their uniforms (but still looked wildly out of place) but we are led to believe no one thought to leave their wallets at home just incase something happened.

I didn't even know they *had* Starfleet IDs until that scene.

They played all that for laughs.

the starfleet security guy in TSFS had some kind of badge/ID he could flash like feds in US tv shows always do

Harry Mudd stole Chris Chaples Id.

Ah, yes. Quite. I had forgotten that. In TAS "Mudd's Passion."

I actually dealt with this in one of the Eugenics Wars novels. Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln stole Chekov's gear from the U.S. Military before any harm was done . . ..

I remember reading that and was going to post it. I thought it was an effective way to clean up the dangling plot point.

Shouldn't we have transparent aluminum by now?

If you've ever been put on a "clear liquid" diet for several days, you'd realize that transparent meat should have been a priority, so maybe that's what happened. ;)

As to what happened to the communicator: why couldn't they have built a self-destruct device into it, perhaps time-activated, or perhaps on a command from the ship?

I forgot about that one. Here's an image from TrekCore.

And Sulu had to show his ID at the detention facility in TSFS, too.

I believe he was Federation Security rather than Starfleet Security, but, yes, he an ID too... complete with high-tech LED numbers!
