Now, now, some of the TNG movies are worth watching twice.

Meanwhile, I admit to being a little taken aback that a twenty-something friend had never heard of THAT GIRL with Marlo Thomas, but I guess that show didn't live forever in syndication like I LOVE LUCY or THE HONEYMOONERS or whatever.

Even sadder, recently an editor flagged a throwaway reference to Emma Peel in a manuscript, arguing that a twenty-something character in 2018 would not be casually referencing an old spy show from the sixties in dialogue. He was probably right, so I changed the reference to "Miss Moneypenny."

But that stung a bit.

Emma Peel is one of my favorite Uma Thurman characters.

While I have seen all of them at least twice, it was hard to force myself in the case of Nemesis.

Meanwhile, I admit to being a little taken aback that a twenty-something friend had never heard of THAT GIRL with Marlo Thomas, but I guess that show didn't live forever in syndication like I LOVE LUCY or THE HONEYMOONERS or whatever.

I never saw That Girl, but thanks to someone on this forum who sports a Desi Arnaz avatar, my subconscious took a wander over to Amazon and bought the I Love Lucy series on DVD.

As for the Honeymooners, I prefer the animated version, aka The Flintstones.

Something to keep in mind about Trek is that there are now college-age kids who weren't around for the peak of its saturation in the '90s.

If they watched Voyager a lot as kids, it's kind of interesting that they wouldn't have made some kind of mental connection when the AbramsVerse movies came out. Did they think the show was just called Voyager and not Star Trek: Voyager?

A while back, I looked up from the lunch table in the café at my job & exclaimed. "Holy crap! That guy looks just like Bob Newhart.!" (He did) The 23 year old girl sitting next to me immediately piped up rather incredulously, while still ogling her iPhone, "Who the hell is Bob Newhart?"

Despite my crestfallen dismay, I answered as plainly as possible "He had a tv show. 2 actually." Foregoing what should have been silent humility thereafter, she errantly answered back. "Oh really? What were they called?" Still trying to be painfully devoid of sarcasm, I uttered "The Bob Newhart Show, & Newhart"

The entire table started laughing, & now I'm the asshole. A while later, once the embarrassment was over. I told her Bob Newhart was also the elf dad in Will Ferrell's Elf movie. She said "Oooooh. Why didn't you just say that?" Because I'm not a Google search engine that's updated every other day. That's why.

The issue I have is that when I was 23, I & my peers had a FAR vaster knowledge of the 50 or more years of culture prior to then, than these people have of the last 50 years of culture, & yet, we did not have the oracle of all human knowledge resting, at all times, in our pockets

I'm left to assume that more access to knowledge not only doesn't equate to people being more knowledgeable, but in fact must present an effect to the contrary. It's basically the same as people who can eat anything they want, often don't choose to eat very wisely. My culture also suffers from that problem too

I think maybe they just heard "Star Trek" and just assumed it was a reference to Star Trek: Voyager. I mean, I watched Voyager at the time, and in common parlance with normies it was just referred to as "Star Trek" (i.e. "I'll be watching the new episode of Star Trek" or "it sounds like something they said on Star Trek last night"). This is also how I referred to TNG, DS9, Enterprise, and now Discovery.

In my experience, a lot of people do this at the ticket window at movie theaters. They don't ask for a ticket to QUANTUM OF SOLACE, they ask for "James Bond.' They don't ask for THE WINTER SOLDIER, they ask for "Captain America." They don't ask for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS or INSURRECTION, they ask for "STAR TREK."

That's the tragic part that I think about. Like if someone only had seen Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, & thought "Hey, that was pretty good. No need to see anymore of this Indiana Jones stuff. Couldn't possibly get better than this"

Like a blind guy getting a chance to see through one foggy eye & thinking it's the best shit ever

Perhaps that character had a thing for British Spy shows, but I suspect it was more about the reader not getting the reference.
