so the producers and writers said that discovery will lead into TOS (60's aesthetics and all)...

BARCLAY [OC]: We have always perceived the maximum speed of the Enterprise
Allow me to emphasize a different part. The Enterprise does not have a spore drive, therefore it's maximum speed IS warp. He did not say "Any ship to ever exist is Starfleet."

But no one in all of the federation never perceived the enterprise using a spore drive ever?

^ I love it, there's just one guy at the ASDB who brings it up every time they start a new design.

"So, I had this idea for Project Galaxy—"

"Oh, for God's sake, Gary."

"No, no, hear me out, it's not what you think. Now, we've got this long-range multi-mission explorer equipped to go further than anything we've built before—"

"This sounds a lot like it's going to be what I think."

"—but what if we could still recall the ship for crisis situations within the Federation at a moment's notice? 'Impossible,' you say? Hardly! I think the time is right for us to reintroduce, and perfect—"

"The Displacement-Activated Spore Hub Drive?"

"What? No, I was going to say 'Coaxial Interphasic Transwarp.' Still, now that you mention it, if we used a holographic matrix to simulate—"

"Nope."

Given what happened last episode, I'm sure it's building on why we don't see the Spore drive post Discovery. January's fast approaching. Soon we'll all be enlightened.

See.. I don't know.,if we are talking TOS..why are we assuming it's the TOS show..why not the TOS movie aesthetics? A happy compromise? It just doesn't seem right as is now..

Of course I always assumed the TOS aesthetic was for security reasons, and the tech was made to be super durable. Like it or not, the constitution ship looks and feels like a tank. Not some carbon fiber Aztec patterned construction. Real steel solid construction.

I also was under the impression from playing the Starfleet miniature game, that the TOS era was very ecomonically stagnant. Both klingons, romulans, and Feds technology was made to look very stout, and functional rather then extravagant spending as became more possible as TNG became nearer.

If none of that works, call it what it is, a freaking REBOOT.

I just thought it was a very streamlined version of available tech. But, your rationale makes sense, that economic reasons would limit the extravagance, and make it far more pragmatic and possibly quickly churned out in face of coming aggression.

Regardless, I certainly didn't think that every computer in the Federation looked like TOS computers!

And, of course, a costly war with the Klingons could only exacerbate economic stagnation. Hmm. DSC fits better and better all the time.

Almost liked they planned it out O_o

A costly war with the Klingons means no resources to upgrade ships to Constitution standards, late 2250's and beyond?

Regarding the spore drive, I doubt it will be that soon. I expect it to last at least two full seasons.

The TOS movie aesthetic was basically the TOS era with newer production values and a movie budget, which is also what DSC is, so... yeah. And there's no reason show and movie things couldn't exist concurrently; in fact, they certainly did:

The Enterprise was certainly an older ship when we saw it. Basically, the Discovery represents the state of the art design of the 2250s, and the Excelsior represents the state of the art of the 2280s. Anything else is fair game (there's a thread for that).

It must work like this where some areas of the federation are more technologically developed than others and we're only exposed to the less developed parts prior to the discovery series
