While I try to get the Greatest American Hero themesong out of my head, please consider an aspect of Trek overlooked so far in this thread: rapid aging. There's that one where they all went gray until Bones brewed up just the right cocktail, there's Adm. Jameson, Deanna's baby, and the one where "One" grew up from cute little Borg baby to flying around in space and doing so many zany things... in a single episode.

Since we're considering the next film, perhaps the prime example would be Saavik and Spock. According to the cast credits for TSFS, newly resurrected Spock ranges in age from 9 to 25. To any initiate Trekker, the lore regarding, and even the gesticulations involved with, the Pon Far are well known. It wasn't merely implied that Saavik helped out Spock, we know to a certainty as hardcore fans what wound up happening. And this all took place not in a single episode, or even the span of an entire motion picture, but just a handful of scenes. With so many bizarre things happening in the last two films, as recounted in loads of threads here, there has to be a myriad of possibilities. Where there's a will, there's a way, right?

I think it is a good point to make that if you see fit to withhold your objection to Saavik / rapidly aging Spock b/c the characters are doing something 100% hetero, to make an objection b/c any of the characters are doing what gays do would result in unequal treatment and prejudice at the least, and to borrow a phrase from 60s Kirk, "bigoted" at the worst.

And although he may have gained a few pounds during the years, I hear the Guardian of Forever is ready for his big comeback. I'll admit to being a little jaded with time travel as a plot device, but it still makes things possible. Rapid aging also means the next movie could include even a passing reference, or a scene or two, to LGBT issues in a mild and tasteful manner. Let it be David. Please please please please please.

Oh, and so as long as Carol has no salamander babies from Keenser, I'm down for the interspecies thing. Many thanks to Pavonis for making the most salient point, and to you all, as your input as knowledgeable Trekkers is so valuable to this conversation. It simply amazes me how the Trek is so progressive in so many areas, and is on the other hand a wasteland when it comes to LGBT recognition. I dearly hope the conversation continues until that day finally arrives...

I think that involving time travel just so that Kirk's future child could specifically be portrayed as homosexual would be a bit convoluted....And it would be far more meaningful if they made an established character gay.

Now in another thread, I'd been noting that in the current film (not much of a spoiler here), having Chekov subbing for Scotty only underscores a weakness in the ensemble, that we have two characters doing broad physical comedy...and that they ought to find something else to do with Chekov. Perhaps this...?

David was meant to hook up with Saavik in WOK so the intent wasnt to make him gay (before Nimoy in his infinte wisdom put a stopper to that and screwed up the earlier more interesting version of Saavik). Whether the actor played him as gay or his own body language shone through his performance setting off any "gay-dar" that you may or may not have is anyones guess.

Rand and Chapel would be good, more likely Rand as shes not been name dropped in the films and it appears Chapel and Kirk got it on... That said they could run into Chapel somewhere.

That would be interesting if they wrote him as a Jack Harkness "sex doesnt matter" kind of way...as long as they dont do it as in your face as with Torchwood, I got the feeling they filmed that as Russel T Davis wanted to shock people.

The other thing is why when an actor is gay their character always has to be; Neil Patrick Harris is gay but Barney Stinson certainly isnt, Jim Parsons is gay but Sheldon Cooper isnt (at least not at this stage in his 'evolution')

George Takei may have hoped Sulu was gay but it didnt happen, but as others have said just because he had a daughter doesnt mean he had to have had a female other half.

You’re full of good ideas, TOM. Even though Russkies are notoriously homophobic, I know Chekov would make a great start. If Pavel started hitting on dudes hard, how could that not be more severely entertaining than a dalliance with some commie hippychick?

Besides, you’re entirely right about the subbing for Scotty thing. I’m about 1,000% sure that when the warp drive gets all jacked up beyond Scotty’s reach or repair, Spock is the one to call on to balance the fuel equation or do whatever it is he does down there.

And why stop at Chekov? If I and the gay agenda had our way, from now until the next 50 years every single character would be GAYGAYGAY, and the whole thing would be renamed Gay Trek. In this way, the straights just might get an inkling of how it feels to be a gay Trekker enduring a gays-free Trekiverse for so freakin long.

I'd vote for a more subtle approach...just show a matter-of-fact relationship like the BSG Gaeta webisodes or Caprica.

They could have Kirk presiding over a shipboard gay wedding between two members of his crew (established or otherwise), a la the opening of "Balance of Terror". Now that would be a timely statement.

I thought it might be entertaining if, in the comics (where Orci has said they would explain the change in Khan's appearance), the Section 31 operative who happens to be an expert in genetic engineering and was responsible for changing Khan's appearance was surnamed Bashir.

There’s that old Trek maxim, the glory of creation is in its infinite diversity, and the ways our differences combine to create meaning and beauty. If this is ever to be more than just some hollow assemblage of pretty-sounding words, the Trek has got to be diverse enough to include some gays.
