So, no more barriers to (SPOILERS)

The general objection in fandom is to the idea of the Doctor as a woman. To them -- and to me -- the Doctor is an inherently masculine character, and that shouldn't change. It's just who he is.

But, now we have conclusive proof that sometimes Time Lords do change sexes when they regenerate.

The simple solution?

Whether or not a Time Lord changes sex depends on their gender identification. If they self-identify as someone for whom gender and gender roles are fluid, they can change sexes. If, for that particular Time Lord, their gender-identifications and gender roles are a fixed part of their internal identity, they'll never change sexes when they regenerate, and the Doctor happens to be one of them; he'll always be male because he thinks of his sex as an inherent part of his identity.

There! Simple solution, everyone gets to go home happy. :)

good job:techman:

i still hate the concept tho.. It seems more of a hat tip to a specific "always touting their victim-hood status" demographic..

If the doctor and master become a woman, I would pray for cancellation..

Oh? Really?

And what demographic would that be? What demographic is "always touting its victim-hood status?"

I really have no problem with the Doctor becoming a woman.

In fact, it would surprise me if River Song turned out to *be* a future version of the Doctor...(it would answer a lot of questions - like how she knew the Doctor's name, how she can fly the TARDIS...and who (no pun) loves the Doctor better than himself!? Lol!)

Didn't they kiss though, so he's kissing himself, he's in love with himself?

no, no i am hoping this is not the case

and who (no pun) loves the Doctor better than himself!? Lol!)

Well, to start with, the overwhelming majority of his companions.

I don't think the Doctor actually likes himself very much.

I've no problem with the Doctor regenerating into a woman. Curse of the Fatal Death was great! I agree though with StScoop that whoever they select to play her would be a big thing for me. Minnie Driver is an interesting choice...I might get flak from those who maybe don't like the show as much, but I thought Suranne Jones was wonderful as Idris. She had great chemistry with Matt. It would be an interesting change that's for sure.

At the end of the day as long as the person they cast is the right choice they could be black, white, male, female or a goldfish...but I want them to be cast because they're the right choice, not to just tick a box.

Smith was young, but he was the right choice, so whilst I'd prefer the Doctor to remain male, as long as the right person was chosen I'd live with it.

pretty soon we'll end up with a unisex doctor..cross gender indeed...

why stop there? why not give us a transvestite doctor which has a sex change..

now time lords can just change their sex to have sex if they truly dig anothers personality.. the ultimate in gender neutral dating..

the slippery slope has begun..

maybe the good ole doc will become a woman to have fun with River..who knows what can happen now..

honestly, I just think they should have left that ambiguous..

I do think it's going to happen. IMO, it's more of an issue of "when" rather than "if," and I believe that particular Doctor will be sexy, funny, and fearless...

Thing is, if Matt Smith quit at the end of the series, the BBC is not going to let Moffet put a woman in there as the doctor out of fear ir would confuse the general audiance. t just won't happen becuse Doctor Who is just to big of a show/franchise.

Well, you already made a comment, so this isn't so much "no comment" as "deliberately ambiguous comment."

Oh.. well semantics aside.. I think that if I were to delve deeper into my own point of view, it would very well end up in a lynching..something I am not up for today..

so "No comment" seemed the way to answer sci's question diplomatically

Eh, personally I'd be against it too. I wouldn't call it a slippery slope, just that, should they do that, it would be quite jarring. If they wanted a time lady, they could do a spinoff with a female time lady. They had Sarah Jane Adventures for another show with a female lead. There's no need to change the Doctor. The Doctor is who he is.

Of course there is no need to change the Doctor's sex...but I think it could be an interesting and fun change given the actress chosen to play the role. Personally I don't think this will happen anyway, and I've been thinking about "Curse of the Fatal Death" the entire time in this thread lol.
