So Justin Lin is a Star Trek fan.....

Casting Call for ST3 actors and extras

Elba’s not mentioned. Alice Eve’s not mentioned.
Sofia Boutella and Joseph Gatt are on the list.

What does it means?
Didn't Elba sign the contract? Will we see Carol Marcus again?
Well, Idris Elba was rumored when Orci was still writing the movie. So, if they tossed out his script, and went a different direction Elba's potential part wouldn't necessarily still be in the movie.

Strange not to see Alice Eve as Carol Marcus, though. The end of the last movie, definitely gave the impression she was a full fledged crew member now.

While I'd hate to see her go, I think they have a natural out to move on from the character if they choose.

Alice Eve.... love to watch her leave, but hate to see her go.
Wink wink, nudge nudge, knowhuttah mean, eh? Say no more! :D

I think to be a true fan of star trek, you must make an honest attempt to atleast sit through one episode and each movie, of each series.

Being a fan of TOS and never watching Enterprise to me makes someone not a "star trek" fan.

Not only with Orci. Simon Pegg seems to confirm that Idris Elba is in ST3. "I think so", he said, "as far as I know". "We're trying to write him a kick-ass role!".
Did they forget him? It sounds strange.

Oh...I guess I missed that one. Thanks

I'm more interested in the description at the end: "Star Trek Beyond takes place deep into the five year voyage of The Enterprise." So no more of this origin-story stuff -- we're apparently jumping forward a fair amount of time.

As far as I'm concerned, that would be great. We've seen them young and green on the big screen, and we've seen them old and gray. Not that those movies weren't entertaining and apt to the characters at that point in their lives, but let's finally see them in full bloom without any major life crises or other personal issues to work through.

So, Carol and Jim (Or someone aside from Jim, if they want to bring in another twist) may have already had a relationship earlier in the mission, and Carol has already left the crew. Would explain her absence from the Cast List (as I believe BillJ was alluding to)

Or the cast list isn't comprehensive. It's still very early in the production, so few things are locked in place. And what we hear about online is only a few tiny scraps of information, so naturally there's a ton that we don't know. Just because something hasn't been made public yet, that doesn't mean it isn't happening.

I wouldn't say JJ didn't care, but he relied on the Trek people around him perhaps a little too much to fill in for the gaps in his knowledge.
I think that's underestimating the attention to detail that directors put into their work. Every last element of every line and every shot needs the director's approval. And, as I said, creators do research. Odds are that any director hired to do a film based on a series would watch the series as the very first step of the development process.

I wonder, did JJ ever mention what he watched in prep for the film?

Does he have to? He shouldn't need to pass some kind of arbitrary litmus test. His work speaks for him.

Not to mention, of course, that he wasn't the only person making the movies. As I think I already mentioned, the first two films had a creative "Supreme Court" -- basically the equivalent of a TV writers' room -- consisting of five people, three of whom were Trek fans. Abrams and Burk represented the outsiders' perspective, while Lindelof, Kurtzman, and especially Orci represented the fan perspective. Anything Abrams needed to know about Trek, he could've asked his collaborators. He could've overruled their decisions, of course, but it's absurd to think he was somehow lacking in knowledge.

Yeah, though I wouldn't automatically assume like some do that it's many years later or the very end of the five year mission . Deep in the five years mission can simply mean it's some time later when they are away from earth for good, in deep space exploring different worlds. in short like the series started

^Sure, that's what I meant. It suggests that it's not continuing the threads from the previous movies, but is starting a new story at some remove from it in both time and content.

According to comic "Star Trek: Five Year Mission" (IDW) several months have passed by since they started the journey.
So, that's only the the beginning.

No clue as to the source, but I'm pretty sure he watched the 79 original episodes and six TOS movies before directing ST'09. I also recall him stating he hadn't seen Nemesis.

Well, the comics aren't canonical -- previous ones were contradicted by Into Darkness -- but they're informed by what the filmmakers are planning. Still, the comics we've gotten so far were probably based on the plans from back when Orci was going to direct, and the script was different. So it's possible the new script could've contradicted the assumptions made by the comics. So far, though, it doesn't seem that it has.

Yes, I'm looking forward to finally seeing a movie where the TOS characters are, if you pardon the expression, in their prime.

Plus, ST09 was filmed almost eight years ago, so they really need to advance their in-universe ages a little bit to reflect reality.
