From the 'About' section, on the official site.

I refer you all to this thread, where there was huge debate on whether the Enterprise viewscreen, was simply an oversized digital viewscreen... or a window you can look out of, that doubles as a digital viewscreen when needed.

It is the latter.

Glad we can finally put that to rest. It was always obvious that it was however, much as ancient cared to disagree ;)

I thought we solved that when the pics came out? I think it's great, can't wait to see it. I think it a simple but futuristic answer to the ever important viewscreen design.

[Spoiler?]

Yep, there is a shot that DEFINITELY confirms that it's a window

This is sincere...I want to thank you for spelling definitely correctly...as so many people that do it and especially when capitalized, spell it wrong. I almost thought you'd misspelled it as I'm so used to "definately" or even "defiantly" once!

It's a nice dramatic element and eye candy, but it's silly as hell, in universe. Just from a practical point of view, a viewscreen could be used to have almost any view of the outside you wanted, including a view that would be as if the screen were a window.
Given that the interior of the Enterprise seem to meet with the most criticism (of the little real criticism that's out there other than that coming from the chronically grouchy), I wonder if it will undergo any changes for the next movie?

Ever heard of digital overlays?

I remember in TWOK, when in that Nebula with Khan, I wondered, why the hell don't they look out the window?

View screens can go off line, removing the ability to see outside. Windows cannot. Not a perfect solution but better than nothing.

Not to start a debate, but let's not believe in "real life" that looking out that window would be useful for seeing anything. Stand at a window at night and try to spot an airplane flying over at 30,000 feet. Not easy, even if you know where to look. Now imagine searching for a starship (even one five miles long) that is kilometers away and could be in any direction. Not gonna see it.

This is fiction, so sometimes one goes with something like this for the KEWL factor, dramatic effect, or a sense of scale. The window/viewcreen does look neat, and I'm OK with it for that. But I'm not going to get caught up in trying to find an "in universe" explanation for why it's there. There is no credible explanation. It's like putting a window in a submarine.

That always bothered me too- give a guy a communicator and have him look out and tell them what is where. The Nebula screwed up viewscreens, but in the SFX exterior shots you could see clearly,
