I think we will see him again somehow. They've made a point that some of his memories still exist.

Maybe played by a new actor if not Brent?

It has been said that Data could be recreated from one of his positronic neurons. Picard believes Maddox has some of Data’s neurons and that is how he created dahj/soji. And he is going to try to find Maddox. So the setup for Data’s return is already there. I would welcome it if it happens. Would make a great last scene for the season.

It would make a great last sequence for the *series*...I don't think Brent Spiner wants to play Data for any real length of time anymore

Brent Spiner himself was trying to manage everyone's expectations saying "I'm not in it much..." - so yeah, I'd say he's at most got one more appearance (whether or not it's a repeat of one of the previous dream sequences or not.)

I just don't want this to happen in any way or form. Data was obliterated, the idea of reconstituting him from what is a single cell is really pushing the bounds of bad science even for Trek.

    Let the dead stay dead.

I think the difference is that someone else was "carrying his marbles". If they said they might be able to create a new android from what Data left in B-4's harddrive, then "okay" I guess. But a single neuron is a stretch that I have trouble with even Trek making.

Who knows? It could be brilliant. But that whole piece of the story doesn't feel that way right now. It is the piece I keep stumbling over.

It wouldn't surprise me if they say that Data used some of his neurons or whatever to create Lal and that is where Maddox got Data's "DNA". If that's the case, and if memories go with that, then it would mean that if Data was resurrected he would be as he was in 2366...as thats when Lal was.

He could have also somehow transferred some of his "DNA" to B-4 when he attempted to load his base programming into B-4..

They aren't saying neurons though, they are saying a single neuron.

Okay, one vs plural. The point remains that I was meaning that some of Data's "DNA" may have been used in the creation of Lal or transferred to B-4

He did say he appears at least a few times across the season, though, so we'll definitely seem him again at some point.

But Data won't be coming back to life. It was something Spiner insisted upon, he didn't want Data's death "undone."

I dont believe anything said by TPTB on this or anyone elses appearances. We'll see.

Putting aside the boundary pushing "science" and whether or not we now have an in-universe mechanism for bringing Data back from the dead, then what? I mean, okay - resurrect Data. What does that mean for Picard's story? What does it add? Where would a resurrected Data fit into the new narrative?

I don't think anyone involved - Spiner included - has any interest in cheapening the loss of Data with a resurrection. Part of Picard's journey is dealing with that loss and finding purpose again with the discovery of Data's "daughters".

Data is a more meaningful character to the story if he stays dead.

I don't disagree. But WTF include the ridiculous "science" otherwise? The scene in no way required the suggestion that Data's entire memories could somehow be recovered from one of the smallest parts of his brain. Somehow recreate his body, yes, but not his memories.

I'd love it if Data appeared in a dream at the beginning of every season. But the beginning of the season is the only place we'd see him. Kind of like Gene in the flash-forwards at the beginning of every season of Better Call Saul.

They should have song to accompany Data's appearances too, just like Blue Skies. They do the same with Gene.
