So, I'm now a writer on a new Trek show set in the Prime Universe...

What would you like me to canonize for you?

(This isn't serious if you were actually wondering...)

Re: So, I'm now a writer on a new Trek show set in the Prime Universe.

Every interspecies hybrid was created in a laboratory, except I guess the Cardy-Bajo ones; WW3 and the Eugenics War are the same thing (that's more of a retcon I guess).

Re: So, I'm now a writer on a new Trek show set in the Prime Universe.

WW3 and the Eugenics Wars I'd make the same thing. Cetacean ops is strange. What would you want it to do? I could imagine having some Xindi Aquatics or similar swimming around in an area, but what for?

Re: So, I'm now a writer on a new Trek show set in the Prime Universe.

Well, I kind of meant it as a joke - but in all seriousness - YES! The Xindi aquatics would be perfect for that role!

Also, wouldn't it just be cool to have whales/dolphins on the ship?

(this could be the SeaQuest DSV fan in me talking).

Re: So, I'm now a writer on a new Trek show set in the Prime Universe.

It's just a question of what role they'd be performing. The only thing I can think of that would help the operation of the ship, hence why they'd be there, would be communications, perhaps with races that have non-linguistic communication. Or in case the ship runs into a/the whale probe.

If space can be compared to a great ocean, maybe they'd instinctively have a great knack for navigating a starship.

Better than computers? I've thought about navigation, but it just doesn't work to my mind. The same could apply to birds and flying insects as well, by that logic.

It can't, probably less than the sea of air we swim in can be compared to the ocean. And cetaceans don't do so very well even in the sea of air.

Re: So, I'm now a writer on a new Trek show set in the Prime Universe.

Whales and dolphins use a form of sonar for navigation and communication. This wouldn't work in space. Although it wouldn't be the first time Star Trek writers took 'liberties' with science.

Anyway, is it really important to explain their function? The could fulfill whatever role they were interested in. In the context of Xindi aquatics, as Federation members, they have every right to apply entry to Starfleet and if they pass the Academy, there would need to be some way of providing them a habitat on a Starfleet vessel.

Unless of course they just have their own water-filled ships, which are exclusively crewed by other aquatic species.

Cetacean Ops

It's already mentioned in an announcement in "Yesterday's Enterprise" while Tasha is talking with Shooter McGavin in 10-Fwd.
Yeah, but this was in an alternate timeline. The announcement means nothing.

Geordi escorting one of the Ferengi away saying: "C'mon, let's go see the dolphins" in "The Perfect Mate" is the only canon, in-universe reference to such marine life on the Enterprise.

And Geordi's statement suggests that dolphins are just an attraction, not a part of the crew. (you wouldn't say, "let's go see the Vulcans now", would you?).

"The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual gives further information about the cetaceans aboard Galaxy-class starships, stating they (a mixed group of Bottlenose dolphins and Takaya's whales) are actually crewmembers and form a guidance and navigation consultation team. These cetaceans are elite specialists in navigation, and Starfleet consults them on suggested system upgrades."

That's from Memory Alpha's entry on "Cetacean."

Admiral Ackbar and Capt. Robau's love child.

The tech manual has plenty of stuff in it that's not canon though.

Re: So, I'm now a writer on a new Trek show set in the Prime Universe.

Which ship classes would and wouldn't have Cetacean Ops? If Galaxy is a yes, what about Nebula, Sovereign, refit Excelsiors? Intrepid? Did the Defiant have a few goldfish?

Personally, I'm more inclined to think of it as one of those ideas best forgotten about.

So I apologise for wasting your time. I kind of misinterpreted this as a joke thread. :alienblush:

As for serious considerations - perhaps the use of mines in space combat? I dunno how familiar you are with the Starfleet Command games, but mines were of high tactical importance in those games yet it never comes up on screen. Although I guess the SFC games made ST combat out to be like submarine battles really, making mines a useful commodity?

Re: So, I'm now a writer on a new Trek show set in the Prime Universe.

Canonise a fifth season of Enterprise beginning with The Good That Men Do, Kobayashi Maru & The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing. :techman:

Decanonise Star Trek (2009) by having Nero's ancestors unable to continue the family line, both his grandparents having died in the conflict with humans.

Re: So, I'm now a writer on a new Trek show set in the Prime Universe.

My suggestion for something to canonize:

TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, etc are just holoprograms invented by Archer's crew on an alien holodeck. And film an alternate ending to TATV:

Riker: "Computer, end program."

*Archer and his speechiness disappear*

Trip: "Computer, end program."

*Riker and his holodeck disappear*

Reed: "This is your worst one yet, Mr. Tucker."

Serious and silly, it's all good. But I'm quite interested in the serious too. When I said I wasn't being serious in the first post, I meant I wasn't actually a writer on a new Trek Prime universe show. Should be obvious, I know, but there's always one...

It's like, I've always wanted to believe that Klingons stole cloaking technology from the Rommies, so I'd have that canonized.

On the subject of mines...I've not played the games. I can't imagine how they'd work in battle. Can't you just not fly into them? Space is big and three-dimensional.

A fifth season of Enterprise covering the Romulan War is the dream. ENT is probably the Trek show I'd most want to bring back. That and/or DS9.
