So, I went to Lamarque Ford and test drove a 2010 Taurus today...

NICE!!! :techman:

I do hope you're talking about bio-cars, not Asian cars.

Seeing as my question on the matter was avoided, I have a feeling it's the latter.

I don't bother with questions that have obvious answers. My hatred for Japanese cars is well known. They have no style. They have no class. They have no chance of ever becoming a classic worthy of hot-rodding/restoration one day and I don't like how they drive, either.

Toyota repeatedly paying off Jesse Jackson to avoid boycotts over the years isn't going to change my mind about them, either.

Wow.I don't even know where to start here. For one thing, I don't keep track of all the asinine opinions people have here, so don't assume we all know you. You're not that important.

The rest of the post is just pure ignorance. No style? Interesting, because many American cars are styling their cars to compete with the Japenese entries. I actually find it funny that your beloved '10 Taurus shares a lot of similarites to the front end of my Honda Accord.

No class? Are you kidding me? The Japanese automakers, specifically Honda and Toyota (who make Acura and Lexus, respectively) make some of the most luxurious and classy vehicles on the road. Have you ever driven any of these cars? Because saying you don't like how they drive leads one to believe you've driven a good cross-section of Japanese vehicles in your day, but somehow I doubt that to be the truth.

And since when does a car's ability to be hot-rodded and/or restored have any bearing on whether or not it's a classic or a good car? I love me a '69 Camaro but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the lines of a sleek and advanced modern car.

Not to mention that there are very few, if any, modern American cars that will become classics now either. I highly doubt that 30 years from now we'll be watching a Barrett's Auto Auction featuring a mint 2004 Ford Focus ZX4.

Speaking of the '04 Ford Focus...I was given such a car as my loaner while my Accord was being delivered...and it was quite possibly the worst car I've ever driven. The thing was only 5 years old and it shook and rattled like a washing machine with an offbalanced load and had about as much style and class as a cardboard box. It was my belief that the dealership gives such cars as loaners so that when you get into the car of your choosing you're even more impessed by it's quality. And I was. My Accord is only a mid-range model but it's the smoothest, most exciting drive I've even had in a car.

my dad had an old Taurus . . . called it a Tortoise
the new one definitely does not look like a 'Tortoise' :D

The mileage of that car, in any trim level, is still far superior to anything I've ever had in my life. If I bought a Taurus, it would be the first Ford product I've ever owned.

Mr. Mass sent me a Facebook message thanking me for going out to the dealership to check out the car. I think the thanks should be going the other way around. Checking out cars is always a fun time... unless it's something that burns rice instead of petro chemicals. :klingon:

I'm just saying Ford can do better than that. My Chevy's a 1999 Monte Carlo and I get 30 MPG, and that was way before gas prices got this high.

J.

And that Monte Carlo doesn't have a 365hp engine option, either.

I was going to say, J....

The EPA estimate for the 1999 Monte Carlo LS 3.1 L is 21 city/26 hwy mpg with 160 hp. The Z34 with the 3.8 L and 200 hp got 19 city/30 hwy mpg. The EPA has also changed their testing methodology in the past few years making newer vehicles have worse mpg rating, relatively speaking, by about 10%. It was to reflect the higher speeds an increased stop and go traffic people face now.

The 2010 Taurus has 263 hp, weighs more due to more safety and convenience features and better stiffness than any Monte Carlo ever made, and it gets 18/28mpg with front wheel drive and 18/25 mpg with all wheel drive. The 365 hp SHO version with awd gets the same 18/25 mpg. You probably wouldn't want to try comparing emmissions or NVH characteristics of the new Ford motor vs. your old pushrod either.

It's a bit like the bullshit argument "Why did the Model T get 25 mpg and the average car today only gets 21 mpg?!" Look at it! I'm sure if anyone actually wanted a 20 horsepower car with a 1200 pound curb weight, no safety features and a top speed of 45 mpg, Ford would be happy to build them and they'd get a hundred fifty frigging miles a gallon! But virtually no one does!!! I look at it from an engineer's point of view, and there have been FANTASIC improvements in vehicle design in the past 50 years.

This car competes with V6 versions of the Mazda 6, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord that get similar numbers. If you are that concerned about gas mileage, Ford also offers the exceptional Fusion. The I4 has 175 hp and gets 22/31 mpg with the manual and 23/34 mpg with the automatic. The Fusion Hybrid has a combined power rating of 191 hp and gets 41city/36 hwy mpg.

I got turned on to Fords in 1996. I had just had total break falure on my corvette and had it in the shop (was able to gear it down to a stop safely). I had done some business with a Ford delership and stopped by there to see what kind of deal I could make. I wound up with a 1995 Cougar. I later found out that a certian number of Cougars had recieved the new V-8 engine that was to go into the Mustang GT's in a few years, this Cuager was one of them. :)

Anyhow, I put almost 300K miles on that thing and had very few problems. 3 batteries, a couple alternaters, and a couple of front end rebuilds is the best I can remember on repairs. Oh, and the last summer I had it I had one can of freon added (R12 IIRC). Well, at close to 300K my compression started going and my gas milage went from around 25mpg to around 11mpg so it was time to turn the old gal out to pasture after 10 years of use.

I actually got 2K trade in on it (because the A/C worked) on another program car in 06 and got me a V-10 Excursion. I've had it 3 years now and not one trip to the shop yet. . .

I love my Cougar(Mercury/Ford) because of all the time I've spent in it the last 5 years and the memories I've made and the places I've been, but It has so many little problems with it that at this point it is a running joke amongst my friends. The stereo occasionally doesn't work, or the volume knob wont, or the speakers on the left side of the car stop working. The AC wont work if you turn it on anything above the lowest setting. I had the breaks go out on me on the rather crowded freeway at 70 mph for no apparent reason and then they charged me over a thousand to fix it(at the dealership). The gas mileage is about 5mpg lower than it is supposed to be with no apparent cause, and the electronics that track this continue to tell me the wrong numbers. If I go uphill with less than a third of a tank the engine dies. Trunk doesn't pop open and the key on it doesn't always work so I occasionally have to get someone else to open hit while i hit the button. It wears out rear wheels really fast for some reason. Etc. etc. etc.

So yeah, fuck Ford.

It's funny to me that Ford is still sticking with that numerical keyless entry panel on the B-pillar.

The Taurus has always been a good car and I think Ford has some the best and most consistant styling of all the automakers, yes even GM who's signature cars look good on the outisde but have crap interiors, which is why I'm a big fan of Ford.

The Taurus is good car, I'd probably make the Taurus the next car a buy.

The 2010 looks great.

To repeat: Nope, but it still hauls ass and gets me where I need to go, and I save lots of money on fuel. :D

And yes, my car does get about 30 miles to the gallon (HWY).

Do you really think it matters?

In 25 years there's probably only going to be one car company anyway--probably associated with an airline.

See, Ford has its shit together. I've never been a Ford fan but they know what they are doing. Come on, GM!

Don't worry, the General will be back to his old winning ways soon enough. I'm just sad that Pontiac and Oldsmobile won't be going along for the ride.
