Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a 1992 supernatural action comedy inspired by the horror movie Night of the Comet. It was very much intended as a serious film by its writer, Joss Whedon. But during production, executive meddling reared its ugly head and it would end up in its current form getting mixed reviews and low box office income as a result.
After finally watching it... Yeah, it's a flawed flick. But it is actually pretty entertaining. Although Joss hated how the movie ended up as a comedy, I have to say that a bit of the jokes do land here, with some good zingers that end up making the film worth watching. Cinematography-wise, its admirable with some solid special effects and lush colours. But the real reason why it's so enjoyable is thanks to the acting, especially of its lead star Kristy Swanson as Buffy. Kristy is the film's heart, soul and pulse, nailing the character's development, growth and journey from basic valley girl to brave chosen Slayer. She does well to ground the movie and make Buffy an endearing protagonist and the movie an enjoyable watch.
Of course, we all know that this wasn't the end for Buffy; Whedon would decide to go back to the concept to make a TV show which was supposedly a sequel to the film, but in reality a sequel to his original script. And the OG script would be put into comic form as "The Origin" when the show became a ratings smash. I've read "The Origin", and now that I've seen the finished film, I think most elements work best in the OG script, whilst some elements work best in the finished product. But that's just me. I'd like to hear your thoughts on Buffy and its OG script down below to see what you think.
