Although I love the shared feeling of watching a TV series in first run, I envy your friend that she gets to experience Trek for the first time. My husband is picky about what he watches and it is difficult to find things on TV or DVD that truly interest him. It is such a pleasure when we find something that he likes. Fortunately for me an occasional episode of TNG on DVD fits the bill.

I liked Masks when it first showed, so it was interesting to find that it was not a well received episode here at the BBS. I loved the Inner Light and it still remains a favorite of mine, but I remember wondering how many people would like such an atypical episode.

The one that introduces the Cardasians: OBrien's line "I don't hate you for what you did Cardassian, but for what you made me do" or words to that effect.

That would be "The Wounded."

That episode was VERY powerful--I agree: so much that even though I only heard "The Minstrel Boy" once, for the first time ever, without the chords, I recognized the song IMMEDIATELY upon hearing it years later and it brought back the impact of that episode.

I thought the episode suggested a lot of depth to the Cardassians, a promise finally fulfilled at the end of DS9--and all of that from a first impression!


About Masks--It's not just her.

I liked it as well--I was a huge mythology buff at the time and I liked the primal imagery of the episode. It's not that the plot was that hugely spectacular, but the power of the archetypes it evoked that did it.

I know that's a pathetic way of explaining it, but yeah...

I showed her "The Wounded" and after many years of not seeing it, I found it to be really powerful. I'm not sure my stepdaghter really understood the implications of the episode, but she did seem to like it.

I also like archaeology and I remember watching the episode with my sister who was in college at the time and very interested in episodes like "Darmok" and "Masks". Darmok for the language and Masks for its LIVING archaeology. I absolutely thought it was brilliant.

Rama, you have done good work. Especially if she likes Janeway.

I hesitated showing it to her. Voyager was not my favorite series..I have watched those episodes the least over the years. In showing them to her I have found new appreciation for it..I watched "Resurrection" today , I found it to be a genuinely sad episode for Chakotay.

Rewatching it as a shared experience with those who are close to me is a very pleasant experience. My wife also gets into the action and started requesting episodes to watch. Its awesome!

If she liked "The Wounded" you might try showing her "Preemptive Strike". Sort of similar in the message, but different in it's own way. A 7th season gem, to be sure.

I really think it's great that you have been able to use Star Trek as a bridge between you and your stepdaughter. Especially if you both take the time to discuss what you have seen and the lessons you can take away from the show. If more people interacted the way the Enterprise crew does we might have fewer problems in the world today. I wish you well in this journey of discovery and that as you enjoy Star Trek together may it bring you closer and make you both better people.

Trying to get my 20 yr old stepdaughter to watch ST is like trying to wrestle with a targ. Yet, I somehow managed to get her hooked on the "Inner Light". Afterwards she called it "really powerful". She even watched 2 other episodes with me! I think I am beginning the conversion progress!
