So I showed Inner Light to a non-Trekker..

Trying to get my 20 yr old stepdaughter to watch ST is like trying to wrestle with a targ. Yet, I somehow managed to get her hooked on the "Inner Light". Afterwards she called it "really powerful". She even watched 2 other episodes with me! I think I am beginning the conversion progress!

May the Great Bird Bless you, Sir. You do the work of the Prophets. :bolian:

Don't let up, RAMA!

If she liked "The Inner Light", show her "The Visitor", "Far Beyond the Stars", "Yesterday's Enterprise", and "City on the Edge of Forever" next. Those are the closest in emotional impact to "Inner Light".

i showed my aunt ,*( who is a very adamant ,non sci-fi watching , matlock loving 79 year old woman ) "remember me " the ep where dr crusher ends up with everyone disappearing from her world . and she loved it . so i would recommend this one to a non trekkie as well.

I'm sorry to say that I'm one of the few Trek fans that can't stand this episode.

That's just fine. "Infinite diversity" and all that. We Trek fans need to remember that. BTW, I watched the ep this morning (probably for the who knows how many times) while working out and STILL bawled at the end. Love it! :techman:

All the episodes named are excellent. At one time or another I've shown those and others to non-fans, who usually enjoyed them.

Unfortunately, the reaction I usually get is something along the lines of, "Yeah, those handful were pretty good, but the rest I've watched were awful/sucked/not to my liking."

So, while it's easy to get someone to watch, say, "The Voyage Home," in my expereince it rarely translates to them becoming a "Trek fan."

Unfortunately.

I'm another. The Inner Light is the TNG version of City on the Edge of Forever, everybody thinks it's "high art" (whatever the hell that means), but I see it for what it is.

Pure shit.

But it DID have that good tune.

That said, Rama, show your sytepdaughter the Mirror Universe episodes. A high point of every series they were on.

Also, The Alternative Factor from TOS, no popular with most fans, but I love it.

HAHA! She watched 4 more episodes now! BOBW, Family and Brothers!

Rama:

You are doing good work! I can see you and your stepdaughter are bonding, so congrats to you for your diplomatic skills.

All good choices. The Inner Light is one of those ST eps that is accessible to non-fans because it doesn't really require a detailed knowledge of that universe. It works as a simple "I dreamed I was a butterfly" type of story.

And Darmok is just plain fun and makes reference to mythology not often repeated on broadcast TV, the epic of Gilgamesh and Enkidu. I love how when the Tamarians tried to have Picard and Dathon relive their legend they wound up acting out the legend of Gilgamesh instead.

Maybe it's time to get away from the family episodes and show her Pegasus and the Drumhead. I'd be a little skeptical b/c they are kind of preachy, but when it's all said and done still pretty damn good drama, so they're probably safe. The Wounded would be another good choice.

Inner Light, BOBW, Family, Brothers, Darmok, Conundrum...it's a who's who of all my favorites! Great choices. :D

Show her "The Defector" - season 3. Powerful ep.

Agreed. I just rewatched it last night. The part where Jarok realizes he's been deceived, the look of defeat on his face, is heart-breaking, as is the last part when Picard muses over the letter Jarok writes to his family. -- RR
