So, I noticed something very strange...

I own all the Star Trek series and movies on DVD (and what's been released on BLU-RAY), so I rarely find myself watching episodes on Netflix.

Except for today.

I was watching the S2 episode "Alliances." At the end of the episode when Janeway is holding the conference with the Kazon to discuss their alliance, there was something I noticed that I know was never on the DVDs or even on the episode's original network broadcast. As the Kazon are being introduced into the conference room, there seems to be canned applauce and cheering when each Maje is announced.

Has anyone else seen this? When I heard it, I thought at first there was some ad playing on one of my browser tabs, but there wasn't. It's actually from the episode! I don't understand why that's even in there considering there are no other people in the room!

I noticed that a few months ago when I first started re-watching the series on Netflix. I don't own the DVDs but I still thought it was strange!

Oddly enough, that's how I imagine it's like in real life when Kim Jung Undead enters a room, fresh of of eating a tub of frosting and using the Hubble telescope to find his micropenis.

I don't remember that at all, but it's great characterization. It's so unconsciously cheesy, cheap, and self congratulatory, it's the Kazon reaching for anything to make themselves seem more important than they are yet making themselves more ridiculous.

I've noticed it before but I've always assumed that Minnis of Pommar is like the former Romanian dictator Ceausescu who used recorded applause at his speeches to make it sound as he was incredible popular.

I recently saw this through Amazon Prime, and I definitely noticed the trumpets. I had not seen the episode since it was originally aired, so I did not know that this was not there originally. Basically it is not limited to Netflix.

I've seen this episode a few times so I'm familiar with the story. I just can't understand why it was decided to add in trumpets and applause to this scene. Wasn't the idea behind the conference to bring all the bickering Kazon factions together? If they hate each other so much why are they cheering each other on? You'd think Culluh was Justin Bieber from the reaction he got

This seems interesting and perplexing. I tried searching on old Google Groups around the airing of the episode, and I can't seem to find a mention of the fanfare or trumpets or applause. This implies to me that it probably didn't air on UPN with that music.

Someone on reddit suggested that it was placeholder music from the production team that was in the source copy Netflix acquired (and has not been fixed in the last three years). Presumably Amazon Prime acquired the same source copy, or acquired there's from Netflix.

The scene in the official, DVD version has subtle orchestral music playing in the background. The music kinda skips along with the introductions, so it might've had to be written after the scene was finished. So maybe the placeholder fanfare was there until they could get episode properly scored. I don't presently have access to Netflix, so I can neither confirm nor deny if the episode has any original music in other places, or if it (or any other episode) is mostly silent, with odd placeholders here and there that stand out less.

I remember thinking that it was ridiculous, but in keeping with the egos of the majes, when I saw it on Netflix a few weeks ago. It had been years since I'd last seen the episode, so I didn't realize it hadn't been there all along. I'd love to know what's behind the decision to add (or remove?) it after the original airing!

This. The Kazon was just the first season fat guy. They were there just to make the main cast look relatively good while the show was smoothing out the edges.
