So, I noticed something very strange...

I remember thinking that it was ridiculous, but in keeping with the egos of the majes, when I saw it on Netflix a few weeks ago. It had been years since I'd last seen the episode, so I didn't realize it hadn't been there all along. I'd love to know what's behind the decision to add (or remove?) it after the original airing!

That's just it! It's almost fitting when you consider the way the Kazon carried themselves. I couldn't help but think this is like something you'd see on old state television during the Soviet years when someone of importance would enter a room; there'd be corny, fake applause to make it seem like more than it is.

And just more of a sidenote: on the Kazon; I was reading some of the production notes about their development on Memory Alpha. They were originally thought up to be gangs known as "Bloods" and "Crips" and be some kind of allegory for the LA riots of the early to mid 90s. I like the original idea of them, but they weren't developed well.

And let's not kid ourselves; they look ridiculous.

Bizarre. Keep watching. I wonder what else is different? Does Harry ever get a promotion in the Netflix version of VOY? Do they drop Neelix off during season 2?

I've only ever seen Voyager on Netflix, so I didn't realize it wasn't there originally. I also interpreted it as a ridiculous way of displaying their self-importance.

I've noticed it before but I've always assumed that Minnis of Pommar is like the former Romanian dictator Ceausescu who used recorded applause at his speeches to make it sound as he was incredible popular.

I have to correct myself here!

I just checked my Voyager DVD with this episode. There are no trumpets or applause in this scene on my DVD. The only sound is some background music drone which usually occurs when something dramatic is about to change.

I must have mixed that up with those trumpets and believed that I've heard them before.

I also checked my taped version on this episode from 1998 when I taped it on a VHS tape. No trumpets there either so my European TV station obviously didn't air any "trumpeted" version back in 1998.

So I really wonder: Who put down a lot of effort in coming up with those trumpet sounds in this scene and why?

Could it simply be an audio mastering foul up?
Like maybe the cheers are in one version of the stereo version but not on mono, lol I don't know I've never set up speakers or surround sound.

I can tell you for a fact that those trumpets and applause didn't appear in the original airing, and it definitely isn't on the dvd.

I honestly have no idea why that would be on there.

You are all Worf in "Parallels" -- you have hopped over into the next universe, where different editing decisions were made in post on "Alliances." Keep an eye out for other subtle differences, and be aware that at any moment you may find yourself with a new spouse...
