So I got and XBOX. Now what?

I'd like to ask you - just what game is the best game ever made? Metal Gear Solid 4, which deserves an 11 on IGN's 10 point scale or GTA4 for apparently having a script that rivals the best of Hollywood, even though it's fairly simplistic, misogynist and homophobic?

What's strange is that reviewers end up being more fanboyish than actual fanboys. It's like they feel the need to justify their early access to the publishers that give them games.

I hate reviews which give 10...NO GAME EVER is or has been a 10 and infact I don't know about you lot but the highest score I have ever given is 9.0 to the following lucky few...

F.E.A.R
Call of Duty 1
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 4
Assassins Creed
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2
Goldeneye 007
Perfect Dark (Original)

Well, it's weird. Some magazines take the position that a 10 doesn't mean perfect, it just means "really, really good".
What makes it stranger for IGN to give that out is because they are basically using a percentage scale. Both MGS4 and GTA4 are basically 100% in their eyes.

The drums are supposed to be improved with Rock Band 2. They also might (key word is MIGHT) have The Beatles.

Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto might be able to hold you off three months. :)

If you like football, NCAA 09 comes out in a couple weeks.

This isn't a good time to buy a 360, the price is about to drop (basically confirmed by advanced copies of Sunday ads) and there are rumors that the 20GB model is going to be replaced by a 60GB model.

Well it's a bit too late for that now. ;)

Quite right. Everyone could wait around for the price to fall some time in the future.

We're working through the Orange Box just now. I know it's all old stuff but it's our first time and it's great fun. I loved Bioshock too.

Orange Box and Bioshock are both great... But I always there should be a caution about having expectations set too high on Bioshock, because while it's good, it's not as innovative as it was made out, especially if you've played System Shock.

you can still buy rockband and get rockband 2 when it comes out (just the game). it seems like everything is forwards and backwards compatible (songs you dl for rb2, work in rb1).

I guess it depends if you want to spend the money on the instruments now. The guitar looks like it's the same, with a new paint finish... but this time it's wireless.
Personally, I don't mind wired controllers, so it's not a big deal.

I would get GHIII with the guitar controller and let that tide you over. The GHIII guitar is superior to the RB guitar anyways.

In the normal world if you give a perfect score then you mean perfect and really these reviewers need to stop being silly. 9.9 fair enough but never a 10

i havent heard good things about gh3... i passed on it because i wanted the next game harmonix (the guys that did gh1 and 2) did. i also can't stand the art style of gh3...

GHIII wasn't bad, it was actually pretty good IMO. But it was missing the Harmonix touch. I hear they fixed the problems with HO/PO in the Aerosmith version.

Sorry, but that's a load of crap. So on a 100-point scale they can give a 9.9, but never a 10? Why not? The difference is a somewhat negligible 0.1.

Eurogamer - one of the few credible review outlets - work on a 10 point scale, and don't have any qualms about handing out 10s where they're deserved.

From their scoring policy:

Let us make absolutely clear that a 10 is not and probably never will be "the perfect game". There's always something criticisable about a game, however small.

A 10 will inspire the reviewer because it gets so many things correct. It will be something truly groundbreaking and aesthetically successful, be consistently enjoyable, get the balance right in difficulty terms, be technically very impressive, and be polished to a shine. It will leave the player in no doubt that they're playing something special right from the word go and will continue to inspire and amaze throughout. As we've said, this doesn't mean it's perfect, and we'll be sure to say where it goes wrong too, but maybe those niggles are just so minor that you can let it off.

So yeah. Get over it.

Games I would recommend picking up (or at least trying out):

Army of Two
Beautiful Katamari
Call of Duty 3
Call of Juarez
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Condemned 2: Bloodshot
Crackdown
Devil May Cry
Frontlines: Fuel of War
Grand Theft Auto IV
Halo 3
Mass Effect
The Orange Box
Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Stranglehold
Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged Vol. 1

Edge's policy is that a 10 means that a game redefines what we expect from games. The word they use is "revolutionary". That's why they've only given out nine tens (and three "would have been if we'd been around" ones).

That doesn't mean that the game is perfect, but surely 5/5 implies perfection by your terms, or an A+ or two thumbs up ?

I don't completely agree with their list, I would not have put Halo or Halo 3 on it (they would have gotten 9's) and Grand Theft Auto 3 or, more likely, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City should be on the list.

Edge went crazy with the 10s last year. I think it was Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy and Orange Box.
