so i finally took the plunge and watched lower decks

Like anything else in life, not everything works for everyone. But it sounds like you gave it a fair chance to entertain you.
yea that's the thing. i can say that it's not my type of comedy and still say, hey, they done a good thing here. which is not something i'd say about discovery (or even picard).

I'm digging the Teen Titans crossover with Cyborg and Beast Boy, err Girl.
Booyah!

1.) it moves extremely fast and everyone is yelling all the time. but that's my problem. this appears to be common in contemporary adult animation. i haven't had television (as in, had a TV in the house with cable) in two decades so i've been unable to warm to how fast and loud it's gotten. for me it's like being thrown into scalding water. but, again, that's not the fault of the show. my friends tell me it's like rick and morty and archer, but i don't know i haven't seen those.

2.) too short. the episodes seem to be over before i've even settled in. what was simpsons in the 90s, 22 minutes? at the pace these go they feel like 15. i wish the show was prestige length (40–50 min).

3.) the characters are cute and for the most part smartly written.

4.) i didn't really laugh at anything. i think i smiled a few times. the comedy i go for is quiet, cerebral, and dry. understated jokes. obscure references. sort of joel in the early years of MST3K. this show is more like the last years on the sci-fi channel with mike. more "obviously written" comedy.

5.) i think the cat doctor is the funniest of the lot.

6.) this show has a really good heart. like the orville, it manages to mock trek tropes and also be a loving tribute. and the fan service works because of the format. it would be tacky in a live action show to have so many references and in-jokes. here, it works.

7.) lastly, i really appreciate that even though all of the people and aliens are drawn disney channel / nickelodeon "silly looking" (i don't know what else to call this style), all of the settings, technology etc (the world building) are drawn photorealistic and consistent with what we saw on TNG. i think if the set pieces were in the more wacky kids morning style too, it would make the show very difficult to watch. the computer animated effects (the show's "CGI") like the ships and lighting and space stuff are especially beautifully done.

conclusion: it's not really my cup of tea in the comedy department, but i really admire what they have done. everyone involved clearly cares a great deal for trek. i could see it going on for many seasons, and having cameos from every live action show. with animation, the sky is the limit.
Well thought out and delivered. I can respect that kind of post. Every show isn't for everyone and that is fine! I started out completely neutral on the show, and the first few didn't change that opinion. The last half of the season sold me and when 10 was over I wanted MORE NOW. #5 is my favorite character as well FWIW.

I binged itbefore Discovery started. And I liked it well enough, I see the rick and morty-ness which I don't mind too much but I am glad they got toned down a bit. I wish it was a lot like bojack horseman if I am to compare it to newer cartoons.

I love the cat doctor she is very McCoy/Pulaski which I love.
From the main lower-deckers I like Tendi the most.

I did laugh quite a few times myself. For whatever reason I crack up when Mariner tells Ransom he's hitting on a salt vampire and as he is turned around sayin uh un, she's all salt vampire-y. And I liked the red hour jokes, great call back.

I look forward for more seasons.

I had put off watching it because (and I know this will get me flamed) I really didn’t like the The Animated series. It was too campy and just wasn’t much for me.
But I binged watched Lower Decks this weekend. I am Dedicated Trekker having watched tos in first run on a Black and White tv, and years of reruns,
All the movies and all the new shows with out fail and love l them all..except DS9
And this was no different, action packed and moves quick.
Star trek is a little lacking in humility some times and those who take trek as dead serious then stay away. But for me it’s had me laughing out loud and cracking up.
Like the Riker and Troi scenes on the Titan. “ oh the Jazz....” lmao
Well done series for trek fans who don’t take it as a holy writ.
Its Star Trek enjoy.

It was better than I thought it would be. Similar to the Orville in being a tribute and a parody simultaneously. Definitely some fan service but nothing wrong with that. Trek from the beginning had plenty of episodes where it doesn't take it self too seriously.

The best parodies are also tributes. They're created by people who genuinely know and love the fandom. "Spaceballs" was actually made with George Lucas's blessing, and he even gave them unused Star Wars footage.

"Godspeed, you crazy fucks" is still the best line of the season, and it was so unexpected that I laughed very loudly and scared the hell out of everyone else in the house because it was 3 AM and I couldn't sleep.

In some ways it's the Ted Lasso of the Trek Universe. The heart and loving approach make it more than the sum of its parts.

I think it's Star Trek meets Mel Brooks. Only think missing is someone saying "Snotty beamed me twice last night. It was wonderful."

Wait, why would you need to “take a plunge and watch Lower Decks”? Did you expect it to be like jumping into cold water? It’s Star Trek in The Simpsons tradition, nothing too controversial for a fan to experience.

It's Star Trek in animated form. Yeah, that's controversial with the only past Trek animated series being TAS.
