So I am watching Die Hard right now...

...and I forgot how brilliant Alan Rickman is in this film. I must say he is one of my favorite villains of all time. Your thoughts on him, cause while watching it, there are all the subtle things that make his performance so memorable.

Rickman was brillant in Die Hard.

Yippie ky-ya. Motherfucker.

I know it became McClane's signature line, but Rickman delivered the hell out of it.

I LOVE his delivery of

"I'm going to count to three...."

his voice during that is so great. he sounds slightly miffed having to deliver such a cliche line:lol:

He's great in Die Hard! I think his menacing voice makes him such a brilliant villian here. And maybe the beard too. He had both those in Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves IIRC.

But he could read the phonebook to me and I'd be enthtralled!:drool:

The voice and mannerisms really sell the character, one of the best "suit and smile" villains who is still ruthless (well, poor Takagi lol), even as Snape he really makes a better villain than most of the big bads of the Harry Potter series.

I love Rickman in most things, but Hans Gruber is one of the coolest characters. His delivery is perfect -

"Now I have a machine gun. Ho. Ho. Ho."

"The benefits of a classical education..."

Holly: "After all your posturing, all your speeches, you're nothing but a common thief."
Hans: "I am an exceptional thief, Mrs. McClane. And since I'm moving up to kidnapping, you should be more polite!"

"Nice suit. John Phillips, London. I have two myself. Rumor has it Arafat buys his there."

Hans: The following people are to be released from their captors : In Northern Ireland, the seven members of the New Provo Front. In Canada, the five imprisoned leaders of Liberte de Quebec... In Sri Lanka, the nine members of the Asian Dawn movement...
John McClane: [listening on the radio] What the fuck?
Karl: [mouthing silently] Asian Dawn?
Hans: [covers the radio] I read about them in Time magazine.

Still the best action movie ever and Gruber/ Rickman is one of the all time great bad guys. He single handedly seems to have created the 80s/ 90s fad for British villains in action movies. Bruce Payne in Passenger 57, John Lithgow pretending to be a Brit in Cliffhanger, Nigel Hawthorne in Demolition Man, Michael Caine in On Deadly Ground, Timothy Dalton in the Rocketeer, etc, etc, etc ...

Alan Rickman is perfect in this role. Better than the usual "villain type" in the last 25 years. i think a lot of bad guys were written following Rickman's performance in this film, but they failed...

by the way, he's the only reason I got Robin Hood on DVD. Nottingham has never been that fun to watch !
