So how violent will ROgue One be?

Just putting it out there...I wan to take my family, 2 daughters age 5 and 11, and just wondering what it might be like...as it seems to be a fairly dark movie.

Really, all of them had violence, but a big difference between, say A New Hope and Revenge of the Sith...so wondering where it might fit in that scale.

They were with me with The Force Awakens and now my 11 year old was Rey for Halloween

Seriously though, AFAIK it hasn't been rated yet but it'll probably be a PG-13 in the states (12 over here.) Can't see them going any higher than that. Any lower and it'd have to be pretty sanitised for a war movie. So no, if it were me, I probably wouldn't be taking any younger kids to see it.

There's a toy line for the movie that seems to be more target at kids than with the adult collector, so I can't imagine there being anything too graphic in the movie.

"Sith" had some violent moments, but still was pretty much within the PG-13 rating. TFA was even less violent, there were some moments with blood, saber impalements, people being eaten by Rakthars or nasty injuries, but nothing quite as bad (At some points in seemed a bit tamer) as Vader's "birth".

Anakin getting burned is very graphic, but otherwise I just don't see anything in ROTS that is much different from any other Star Wars movie. The next most disturbing scene would probably be Anakin slaughtering the younglings, but even that's more implied than shown. Maybe implied is the wrong term, other characters do talk about it after the fact, but it still isn't actually shown.

That doesn't mean anything these days, BvS had tons of clothes and things geared towards young kids, but I don't think I'd consider that a kid friendly movie.

Most of the enemies will be stormtroopers, so the violence against them is likely similar to say a older John Wayne staring World War II movie. Explosions, shooting enemies, but no blood. And even Darth Vader becomes involved and starts choking and slicing people, I don't there will be blood since it is a lightsaber doing the cutting.

I'd say somewhere in the realm of Captain America 2 and 3 seems a fair bet. If you wouldn't want to show those to your kids, you might want to see it yourself first.

I guess it depends on the kid. My 8 year old daughter loves the all the Marvel and Star Wars movies; I don't think she'll have an issue with this.

You saw an amputation in A New Hope. I don't think they'd allow that now.

But there are different ways to show a bleak end for some in this film.

Last night I was watching A New Hope (I actually fell asleep--go figure). The cantina scene was jarring to a lot of kids alone.
Yet I accepted the ships and the droids. Right at the very end--when Han and Leia and Luke are hugging it out--I said--"no one is ever that happy."

Now the actors may very well have been glad the movie was wrapping up--but they're good actors--so who can say. The ships I just took

Years later, we get what might be the opposite of a fun Star Wars film--we got SE7EN, THE ROAD, and FOXCATCHER--which is the closest thing I can think of of what it would be to put The King in Yellow on screen. That movie actually unnerved me more in some respects than did the first True Detective series on HBO.

So people who appreciate film can give gravitas to this upcoming movie...

I had a strnage Star Wars dream once. There were tiny aliens on Earth and star wars was their story--and the flew their ships in real traffic and had adults shout at them--and they ignored the adults.

I must have just watched that commercial where kids in a hospital were sneaking around adults with what looked to be flashlights for guns

Especially if what I suspect will happen, actually does happen:

I think someone's going to survive, if only for the sake of tie-in material. Especially since the tie-ins likely can't do anything with characters like Rey or Finn until after Episode 9's release, barring lead-ups to Episodes 8 and 9. But the characters from the Rogue One movie, regardless if they live or not, their on-screen stories will likely be done after the movie and the tie-ins will have access to lead characters from one of the new movies.

Word coming out is that it is quite a bit more violent than the other movies, but not to the extent that it's totally kind unfriendly. I gather that if you're okay with your kid watching Anakin mow down younglings then you'll be fine with this.

I am not expecting survivors simply because of how A New Hope plays out at the start. Princess Leia's ship racing away with the plans, and Darth Vader finder her to be his only link at finding the Rebel's hidden base. If anyone else has survived, you'd think they'd also have the plans with them so they could get to Yavin, or if they were captured Vader would have other means of finding the Rebel's stronghold. But what we have is Vader going after the plans and trying to find the Rebel's base, with both hinging on Leia at the start.

Now it is possible some of them lived, but there would need to be a reason why they didn't escape to the Rebel fleet or base, and why Lord Vader wasn't having them hunted down to find the Rebel base.

Body count is very high. And we didn't spend 2 hours getting to know the younglings......just a thought.

Well it's no more violent than some of the superhero movie or some war movies that are about, it should be fine for an 11 year old as it got the 12A certificate in the UK as for the 5 year old that's up to you.

As for what happens to the characters lets just say I wasn't surprised by the ending, and I remained 99% spoiler free for the film.
