must say I liked the First City of the Empire cover better.
Unfortunately the "burning house" of the title burnt down to ashes and rubble, and that didn't make a very exciting cover. Then they were also hoping to feature the proverbial "running man" but... he ran away.
(Actually, yeah, that's the original promotional placeholder cover, published in the Simon & Schuster marketing catalogue.)
Martok: "One day, lad, all this will be yours."
Drex: "What, the curtains?"
Martok: "No, not the curtains, lad. All that you can see, stretched over the hills and forests, that'll be your empire, lad."
Drex: "But mother..."
Martok: "Father, I'm father."
Drex: "But father, I don't want any of that."
Martok: "Listen lad, I built this empire up from nothing. When I started, all I had was SWAMP! Other chancellors said I was daft to build a great hall on a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em! It sank into the swamp, so... I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. I built a third one. It burned down, fell over, and THEN it sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up! And that's what you're going to get, lad — the strongest great hall in this quadrant!"
Drex: "But I don't want any of that, I'd rather..."
Martok: "Rather what?"
Drex: "I'd rather just sing."
