Opinions will vary. Kicking out a monarchy tends to piss them off for a few hundred years. Sometimes you have to be a bigger asshole to fight a bunch of assholes around you wanting to screw you over for not wanting their King. Napoleon abolished slavery in France, freed the serfs (even if they didn't want to be free), made Jewish people equal citizens, his reforms are still seen in modern Europe. In France itself maybe, although the sources that I can find suggest that if he did, it was long after most other powers.
As far as French colonies go, he actually did the opposite, reinstating slavery after the Revolutionary Convention banned it.
As I recall, at least one novel has it as "Jabilo," while another has it as "Geoffrey." Meanwhile, the unproduced script that introduced the character had it as "Joseph."
I always thought it was Geoffrey, but I just must have picked that up from a book I read in the 80 or 90s as a child.
They'll likely go with name and a few backstory details from the recent-ish Vanguard novels, since current Trek seems happy to mine those sources for details (like Commander Una Chin-Riley, for example)
^^While Una does come from the novels, Chin-Riley was created for SNW, it just ended up in a novel published before the name was announced on the show.
Chin-Riley was in the Spock Autobiography which just released, but that's because Una was given the name in advance so she could include it in the book.
Ah, fair enough. But the first name of Una was in the novels first (and named for Una McCormack, IIRC)
With all these new character trailers dropping it's interesting just HOW MANY new uniforms are on this show!
What I like is that the characters themselves are swapping them. Especially the women can be seen in both types of "standard" uniform (the T-short one & the zip-collared dress one).
I like the uniforms in general - they look more like "casual astronaut wear" than "military uniform". YMMV obviously, but I jived always more with the former. TOS, ENT & JJverse have always been my favourite uniforms - SNW straight up hits that mark!

anyone feel up to posting some pics of all the variants from the trailers/teasers? I don't know anything about costuming/fashion and thus haven't noticed any of the differences in styles (I do remember the quite different DIS season 2 "jacket" appearance, but outside of that...). I would appreciate some comparisons.

Exactly. One only needs to look at the first 2 pilot episodes to see that. Hell, Spock was in Command division in the second pilot, Uhura wore gold early on. The rank stripes, to me, are close enough.
I can imagine season 2 opening with, "Captain's Log, we finally fixed the replicators and the crew have their correct ranks..."
Someone pointed out Chapel's was from Memory Alpha, as it was her rank in her final chronological appearance and that site treats everything in Trek as the past tense.
It's really not a great sign but whatever. Gotta remember these are the same people who forgot rank stripes altogether in "Brother", and had them added in post-production with CG.
