SNW uniforms and characters revealed (old and new)

Uhura can work because she'd be a fourth-year Cadet around 2259 and about 21 years old. It's forced but there are only seven more years before she's a Lieutenant on the bridge of the same ship. A Khan descendant, yeah, that's pushing the stupid envelope.

It's science fiction. Anything can work. That doesn't mean it's not unlikely to the point of pandering to the fandom for nostalgia views and suspension of disbelief breaking.

Exactly. It's like a lot of novels where Kirk and Spock interact as young men before serving on the Enterprise. It sounds really neat, and every thing but it is hard to believe.

It's even worse when you actually think of how many people must be in StarFleet.

Memory Alpha lists 350 worlds as part of the Federation as stated on screen in 2373.

They list 183 member species with a population of 985 Billion Federation wide, which works out to 5.3 billion of each species. Which seems low considering human demographics, but maybe we just breed more and that's why we're overrepresented in Starfleet.

0.4% of the US population serves in combined military branches recently. I'm using the US because Starfleet is loosely based on the US.

With advances meaning people don't need to join Starfleet like they do the military for economic reasons and more general paificistic attitudes, let's use half that rate. 0.2%.

Thats 1.97 BILLION people in Starfleet.

That's not a small universe. Not at all.

I'll give them Chapel, just because she moves on in her career post TOS, but Uhura served on the same vessel her entire career, from cadet to retirement? Una having a hyphenated last name the same as another TOS character? A Noonen-Singh?
I don't like including Chapel because her TOS series bible bio has her joining Starfleet and becoming a nurse after the loss of her fiance, Dr Roger Korby, five years before "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" so ca. 2261-62, and I would've liked to have seen that maintained.

Then again, that same series bible explicitly stated Spock had no siblings (contradicted in 1989) and that McCoy was about 45 years old ca. Season Two (contradicted in "Encounter at Farpoint" in 1987). So, whatcha gonna do?

I don't like it, but I'll live with it and adjust.

I'm loving the new uniforms. The pointy sideburns. "Cage"/WNMHGB Spock hair. Cadet Uhura! M'Benga. A very mod-take on the 60s aesthetic.

Also, looks like the details on the shoulder/sleeves of the new uniform is the department emblem within the Delta (or Flyin' A as Roddenberry called it).

It appears more in line with JJ Trek; there was a similar design of emblems within the fabric.

Series bibles are guidelines not hard rules.
TNG's bible said Data was built by aliens and his name should be pronounced "Dat-ah".

Hell, even the first episode of TNG said that Data graduated in the Starfleet Academy "Class of '78."

Considering Discovery left off at 2259, there's still a minor wiggle room for this to still fit.

Yep, especially if she serves on the Enterprise for a year or two then goes off to be with Roger Korby and then rejoins the Enterprise in Season 1 of TOS.
