Khan also is the “best “ of the tyrants with Scott and Kirk admiring him, much to Spock’s dismay. So his rep is slightly better than Hitler or Stalin.

Remember that there were worse tyrants after Khan, like Li Kwan and Col. Green. Much like Napoleon benefits from comparison with Hitler (lack of genocide helps), Khan's reign looks much better compared to later tyrants.

Considering the savagery we see that Khan is capable of (Suffocating the crew on the bridge, locking Kirk in McCoy's decompression chamber, torturing Terrell and Chekov, and slaughtering the scientists on Regula I), I'd say it's obvious that Kirk and Scotty were grading on a curve.

It also makes me severely doubt that "There were no massacres under his rule" thing.

So, Star Trek is inspiring, is innovative, when it comes up with cool weapon tech? Good to know.

For some groups of people, it does.

I love it. Just Star Trek's weapons tech is boring as watching paint dry. Again, real world is more interesting that a beam of light that we can see (somehow...physics!) that varies in its effectiveness.

Direct Energy Beam Weapons in the real world, rather than the fictional inconsistent constructs. Gauss weapons, different trauma plate and armor types being designed. Star Trek's is rather mixed for me. Rarely does anything interesting with its weapons, and when it does it feels very out of place.

Gauss Weapons are just Coil Guns AKA Cousin to the Rail Gun.

What projectile type would you prefer to launch through them? Kinetic Object, Plasma?

Star Trek is really bad about upping it's armor game.

I remember the time in TNG where they had Phaser / Beam resistant Plastic Containers in the Cargo Bay, yet they couldn't be bothered to make basic body armor out of those plastic panels.

All those poor poor Red Shirts who were hurt by not having body armor of any sort.

Yeah, the lack of body armor irritates me in Star Trek. Hence the reason why I pretty much do not care/am apathetic towards weapons development in Star Trek. It isn't interesting.

I prefer plasma based weaponry with sonic being a close second. I would prefer less kinetic objects but certainly I like having a variety of options. But, Coil/Rail/Gauss are something I find potentially more useful in a variety of mediums.

Yes, that's how I rationalize it. IMO it'd be more accurate to say "There were no massacres reported under his rule."

Honestly, the "Whole populations bombed out of existence" and "Records of that period are fragmentary" lines are enough to tell us that whatever the Eugenics Wars entailed, they must've been pretty bad.

No, we were specifically talking about real world examples and I gave real world examples, not my hunch about fictional characters and their reactions.
Going back to Khan Noonien Singh his parents gave him a name that according to your logic nobody would want to be associated with, like Genghis Khan, but apparently they didn't care.

Interestingly in the IDW comic about Khan, based in the Kelvin timeline but detailing Khan's 20th century life pre-timeline divergence, Noonien is his name proper and he takes up the name Khan only later on.

The comic had a full scale war in the 1990s that not only clashed with @Greg Cox "hidden" Eugenics Wars in his novels, but also the peaceful 1996 Earth seen in Star Trek Voyager. However, it does adhere closer to the "world war" description of the Eugenics Wars described in Space Seed.

If I remember right, in "Space Seed" Spock explicitly tied the Eugenics Wars to World War III. I wish they had stuck to that idea when they later moved World War III to the mid-21st century. It would have made things neater.
