Honestly, I’d be totally fine if they stuck with the crew we have now.

it’s been shown based on TOS and Disco S1-2 that the vast majority of Starfleet at this time is still 90% human. We have 3 aliens (2 1/2 technically I guess.) I don’t think adding a heavy prosthetic or CGI alien crew member would really add anything.

It can be hard to do aliens as main cast since it means extensive time in makeup. There are some exceptions, like Doug Jones who has spent most of his professional career in full makeup

Worf, Odo, Quark, Saru.

It can be done. I'm not saying they need to do it, but they certainly can if they want.

Well, part of Star Trek's appeal is that it uses aliens to fannish delight.

As silly and nonsensical as it might seem, many like Trek because of the aliens, whether or not humans would fit in just as good.

And of course, the casuals might not care (probably don't care). Even Levar Burton was thought to be an alien by one casual production team member.

Alien characters can be a nice addition. So can human characters. I guess I'd just go with whatever inspires the showrunners the most.

They never “got rid of” Hemmer. AFAIK, Bruce Horak agreed to play the character for one season, then departed. He was not fired and did not quit. He did what he said he’d do.

Lower Decks has aot more species represented. Earth aquatics. K'Zinti. Orion, Andorian, Caitian, and many more obscure races, be they from the Animated Series, or one of species from about any of the Alpha or Beta Quadrant based shows.
