Snow?

I imagine local flooding from the melt water is quite likely for some parts of the country, where people live in river valleys. :( Large snow volume + quick melting + deep permafrost making the ground less porous = flowing water.

Flooding was certainly the case in the Tayside area of Scotland quite a few years ago following the thawing of a lot of heavy snow. Given much of the snow this year was in Gloucestershire, one of the sites of the 2007 floods, it wouldn't surprise me if more floods happened this year.

There's not a whole lot of moisture in snow, it takes about 6 and half inches of snow to equal one inch of rain.

Now I take a deep breath and begin a rant -you've been warned.

People are idiots.

People ar gigantic idiots. Another "snow scare" today calling for a few inches of snow (3-6 depending where in the area you live) so, obviously, the first thing people need to do is run to the grocery store and buy food! Because they might be trapped in their house for a day... or two. And they MUST have those roasts and ground beef now! (Seriously, I could pack only ground beef in my cases on a day like today an no one would know the difference.)

Seriously, there's a special on a ground-beef item this week - starting today- 1lb for $1.78 I went through 6 36-lb cases in just 6 hours today. On a "normal" day that would've lasted me a couple of days. With my frsh-grind stuff I sold nearly 300 lbs, orders of magnitude more than I'd normal sell in one day.

Seriously, the weather calls for snow and suddenly people are falling over themselves for goddamn hamburger! Our weekly special on chuck roast also sold like mad, again two or three days' worth of stuff sold in hours. The sucky part is all of this stuff I have to pre-order weeks in advance, so the stuff I got in today was stuff I ordered 2 or 3 weeks ago and it's impossible to get stuff in spur-of-the-moment so there's nothing I could've done, say, Monday or yesterday to order more to shore-up for today's sales.

GOD! What the fuck is wrong with people?! It's just snow! Do you not have any damn food in your house? Are you really that scarcely stocked that you can't go two damn days without going to the store? The ad started today, that means these prices are good for another week! Jesus, people, calm the fuck down! Just because the weather isn't going to be pleseant doesn't mean you need to "OMG I NEED TO RUN TO THE STORE AND BUY HAMBURGER AND ROASTS!!!! I WON'T BE ABLE TO GET OUT OF HOUSE FOT A DAY OR TWO!!!! IT'S GOING TO SNOW, LIKE, FOUR INCHES!!!! AND THERE'S VIRTUALLY NO WAY THE STREETS CAN GET CLEARED OFF OR TREATED SO THAT THEY'LL BE DRIVABLE BY TOMORROW AFTERNOON!!!! AHHHHH GO TO THE STORE!!!!!!"

AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:deep breaths:

Ok, I think I'm better now.

It's been quite a pleasant few days actually. Only a couple of inches of snow here, but enough to screw the trains up enough so I can "work from home." Yesterday, I went to the pub for lunch and had a very nice mixed grill, washed down with a pint of Guinness. Today I went to a different pub and had a Pizza, washed down with a couple of nice pints of Bitter. Might go to a pub for lunch tomorrow for a sandwich and 3 pints of beer. :D

I really don't see what the fuss is about.

I suppose I'm just lucky that my job is one that means I can work from home. More snow please. :)

So all we have to look forward to is flooding followed by rising food prices from the ruined crops.
