Smithsonian and the Enterprise

Decided to take another look before taking a train home; glad I did, as it turns out the shields were installed this morning. Yes, today is Tuesday. :)

I took a video of them "deploying" but posting that will have to wait till I get home.

Here's the shields being raised (or should that be lowered?):

View My Video

After taking the video and pics (a little after 11am), decided to "stay local" and come back to see it light up at 1pm. Thought it would be cool to see it lit up against the planetary background. However the shields, um, raised just before the lights came on. Dr. Weitekamp, the exhibit curator, apparently had the same idea I did and was as surprised as I was.

Not sure a defense is really called for here, but I was taking a portrait oriented still shot of the display case with the sheilds deployed from that vantage point (which I also posted) when they unexpectedly - to me - started to retract. There was a lot of glare due to reflected light, so my focus was on trying to get a shot that showed the entire case, with the "front view" of the Enterprise depicted on the outside of the shield as clearly as possible. By the time I was able to change to video mode, they were already most of the way up. But then after a few moments they were lowered again, and I was able to take video of that. It all happened rather quickly, and I did not have a lot of time to consider composition. Even if I had more time, I'm not sure I would have considered how it might look on a typical computer monitor, but anyway it looks just fine when I watch it on my phone. Which is probably what most people who take vertical videos think, that 5 year old and increasingly out of touch meme notwithstanding.

By the way, Dr. Weitekamp told me that these sheilds were only temporary, and that the ultimate plan will be to apply a film to the windows on that side of the museum that would accomplish the same objective.

This weekend I'll have to post a pic of the poster I found at a flea market years ago. It's a poster that the Smithsonian sold, probably not too long after the model was put on display in the museum originally.

It has the model as redone by the Smithsonian at that point, with a blue sky background, and a blue bar at the bottom saying "Smithsonian Air and Space Museum" or something like that. A neat period piece!

I have that poster, linked to a fullsize image of it earlier in this thread after finding it on Ebay last October, but unfortunately that link is now dead. Here's a thumbnail.

Its similar to this postcard from the same era:

By all means, post pics of yours!
That's it! Yep, I'll post mine as well! In fact, it originally had thumbtack holes when I bought it and when I had it hanging in my bedroom years ago I just used those same holes when I had it in my room. When I moved out on my own, I carefully took it down, rolled it up and kept it put away.

Yup. I personally recommended “shields up!” For fairly obvious reasons.

More importantly the planet scene near the Enterprise is brilliant. Just like you’d want it.
