Smith's Master.

Doctorwhovian

Fleet Captain
We never did see Smith battle the Master-making him and Eccleston the only Doctors to never face him (The first and Second Doctor met the Ainley version in the Five Doctors; also it's pretty clear that the first incarnation knew him, but was not aware of him becoming the Master at that point in his lives). Capaldi will probably have an older Master, should the character be used during his time.

The Master is only really mentioned twice in the Matt Smith era as well, in "A town called Mercy" and as a nod to the Five Doctors in "The Time Of The Doctor" (The symbol the Doctor uses was taken from the Ainley Master by his third incarnation, who said he'd return it at the first oppurtunity. Looks like he never got around to that.

So if it did happen, who would have been a good Master for Smith? A calculating but charming Master like Delgado and to a degree Jacobi, a megalomaniac like Ainley, a vengeful zombie creature like Pratt/Beevers (and to a degree End Of Time Simm) or more comedic/camp but still sinister like Roberts and Simm?

...and who would play him? Would Simm return? Perhaps have him take over the body of Dalton's Rassilon or something like that? Or even have a female Master?

I thought James Nesbitt (Jekyll) would have been a good Master against Smith, assuming Simm didn't want to come back (or wasn't asked back).

Whereas Simm was a mirror image of Tennant I'd have wanted something different with 11, as Smith played the old man in a young body so well I always liked the idea of someone who could play young in an old body. Bill Nighy would have been great.

If you take the thread title literally... Matt Smith AS the Master.

If Romana can chose faces why not the Master?

Keeley Hawes or Rosamund Pike are my fancasts for Romana. Both are lovely and both are great actresses.

Honestly, I never believed in the whole "the Master must change with the Doctor" belief so had the Master returned during Smith's run, I'd have stuck with John Simm.

Mind you, should the Master return now, a new one is probably inevitable, if for no other reason than because Simm kind of has commitments in the US.

Or Peter Capaldi! :p

Yeah, it's kind of true that one Master can stick around for a while-we saw it with Ainley, who fought the forth (for a short time) fifth, sixth and seventh Doctors. Although Davison's penultimate story "Planet of Fire" tried to kill him off, and his portrayal in "Survival" is very different from his other stories, as he reigned in most of the camp.

I wonder if the Master should return, we see some of his 'good' side, which we sort of glimpsed with "Yana" and his last bit in End Of Time (As well as various novels and audiios).

Ainley was financially very, very well off.

He didn't need the paycheck, Anthony just loved playing such a badass.

Well, if Bill Nighy can't be The Doctor, I'll certainly settle for The Master. :D

I'd like a more generic Master personally, one which could outlast incarnations of the doctor and face multiple ones rather like Antony Ainley did, as it's a bit silly him regenerating every time the doctor does. Ben Miles or Stephen John Shepard would be ideal. They look great in a bear too! ;)
