Small spoiler from Yelchin

Cranston

Commander
Red Shirt
Over at TrekMovie.com, Anton Yelchin gives away this small spoiler:

Yelchin: Chekov is just on the Enterprise. A lot of it is green screen. I mean, the Enterprise itself, J.J.’s trying to shoot as much of it as he can with out green screen, but I think a lot of space is obviously green screen — what I’m looking at while seeing the Klingon warships.

Interesting. I wonder if it's just ships, or whether we'll see them individually too?

Mimic, maybe. But I doubt they'll actually use stock footage. Which IMHO is a good thing.

And that comment about Abrams trying to avoid using greenscreen is certainly encouraging. I've defended greenscreen elsewhere, but I think full greenscreen immersion is only really good for something fantastic or purposefully unreal. If you want to make the Enterprise feel like a 'real' environment, you still need sets.

The only problem with greenscreen is that the actors have nothing to react to. The sets they can create from greenscreen can look just as real as the real thing.

I'm starting to think that the "greenscreen" happens to be the main viewscreen on the bridge.
After all when was the last time they used "bluescreen" for the main viwer anyway ?

I dont think Trek ever uses bluescreen actually, they have a lot of blue in most of their shots so every single production picture I have ever seen is a greenscreen.

^ Odd, I seem to recall seeing a big blue field on the TNG bloopers where the Viewscreen is....

That's because they need to use a colour that nobody is wearing and doesn't appear on the set; otherwise, the special effects could be inadvertantly overlaid on top of something other than the viewscreen.

In TNG, nobody on the bridge wore blue (except Troi, briefly, and it was probably a sufficiently different shade). That would be why they could use a bluescreen. In TOS, Spock's uniform could cause a problem, but nobody is wearing green.

Maybe this will be a Kobayashi Maru scenario in a simulator, since Chekov is still supposed to be a greenie Academy cadet in this movie isn't he? Still, either way I expected to see Klingons since they're easily the most accessible and well-known TREK villains in the history of the franchise, even moreso than Khan, the Borg or Romulans.

Probably. DS9 established that Starfleet Academy cadets serve a tour of duty on a starship or starbase during their stay at the Academy. So Chekov could easily be on the Enterprise.
