Sky have out bid BBC for seasons 5 and 6 of Mad Men, to add to their recently acquired HBO catalogue. They've also decided to put these acquisitions on a new channel Sky Atlantic, which will be part of their basic Variety pack for £19pm.

From The Guardian

BSkyB is to launch a new subscription channel, Sky Atlantic, that will be home to US imports including Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire and Treme.

The new high definition channel, which is available to subscribers for £19 a month as part of Sky's Variety Pack, will launch early next year.

Sky Atlantic will have the UK TV premieres of HBO shows including Martin Scorsese's critically lauded prohibition era drama Boardwalk Empire and The Wire co-creator David Simon's new show, Treme.

BSkyB also confirmed today that it has secured the exclusive UK broadcast rights to AMC's Mad Men from next year's series five for the life of the show. MediaGuardian.co.uk revealed that Sky was on the verge of snatching Mad Men away from the BBC last night. Mad Men will also be broadcast on Sky Atlantic.

Well there aren't actually any channels on the HD add on, you pay for the SD version in its given pack, then the HD add on gives you access to the HD version.

Shouldn't it be Sky Other side of the Atlantic?

Sky will never truly dominate the UK market until they consistently start making quality British based shows rather than importing every bit of American tat going (note I'm not calling Mad Men tat, I don't watch it but it clearly seems high end stuff)

What's going to be on sky one if they put all the decent shows on this new channel?

But reading the reports, there is going to be no SD version of this channel, which is why I was confused.

It's not an extra £19, £19 is the minimum package you can get it on, with an extra £10 for HD.

Yes just realised my mistake and was hoping to edit before anyone saw:alienblush::lol:

Sorry, want me to delete that post?

I think Sky One will continue to have stuff like Stargate Universe, Caprica, Lie to me, etc. but HBO, Showtime, AMC, Starz productions will go on the new channel.

Also supposedly Sky One will be getting more home grown shows.

By the looks of it it's part of the variety pack, which is £19 but you will need the HD pack to get it, because there is a * next to the price, but no explanation of what the asterisk means.

I've just been looking at the press release and it says Sky Atlantic will also air their homegrown stuff, so I guess Sky One will be the home of the sitcoms and imports not from premium cable.

so, do you get Sky Atlantic if you're already a subscriber without paying extra?

i get the basic package, plus the movie and sports channels...

Yep, so long as you have the variety pack (the one with Sky One) you get Sky Atlantic. Doesn't seem to say if it is a HD only channel or not though.

I must say even though I thought it would end up on sky I'm gutted that boardwalk empire is not going to be on a free view channel. I'm really enjoying it.

The actual name of the channel according to Sky is 'Sky Atlantic HD', as far as I can see there is no Sky Atlantic.

Their own press release seems to be confused it mostly calls it Sky Atlantic HD, but a couple of times says Sky Atlantic, and at the end where it mentions the price it calls it Sky Atlantic. It also has a * but doesn't say what the * signifies.
