Company Pictures, Film4 and Cinemanx are developing a movie of cult E4 series Skins, written by Jack Thorne and directed by Charles Martin

Producers Company Pictures and Stormdog Films, feature film financiers and distributors CinemaNX, and Film4, have today announced that they are jointly developing a feature film version of the E4 hit television series, Skins.

Scripted by Skins writer Jack Thorne, working closely with Skins creator Bryan Elsley, the film is scheduled to go into production later this year, and follows four hugely successful seasons on E4. The latest of these has just finished its run, with the highest ratings of any series so far. Director of Company, Charlie Pattinson, believes that bringing a film version to the big screen is the obvious next step for Skins - "given the huge amount of support from the ever expanding fan base of the series, we feel that we can go much further and produce yet another unique Skins experience", remarked Pattinson.

A number of familiar characters from the four series will feature in the film, which will be directed by long term Skins director Charles Martin and produced by long term Skins producer Chris Clough. Shooting in Bristol and the Isle of Man later this year, the film is scheduled for a summer 2011 release.

^First series was good, second was brilliant, 3rd and 4th I'm not sure they ever really got to grips with the new cast in the same way they did with the old one. Seems more disjointed but still had some great bits to it.

Never watched it. Is it any good?

Depends on your tastes. I heard all these great things about the show, but when I saw it finally, all it was was Sex in the City with teenagers. Or, perhaps a better analogy would be a somewhat more serious MTV's Undressed where the actors actually were allowed to get undressed. (Put another way, if it ever aired uncut on one of the mainstream American networks, the membership of the Parent's Television Council would, en masse, storm the network offices with torches and pitchforks.)

That isn't to say it's a bad show. I've seen enough positive comments from some pretty well-known people to suggest it must be. But it just isn't for me. Then again, I find shows like 90210, Gossip Girl, and for that matter Degrassi to be a huge waste of time anyway.

All that aside, I don't actually see the point of doing a movie. I mean, seriously, short of going hardcore is there anything the movie could allow them to do that they can't already do on the TV show except maybe film on location in Dubai or something?

Comparing Skins to those shows is like comparing Battlestar Galactica to Andromeda. They're the same genre but not really the same.
Skins is over the top at times but can be very realistic with some powerful scenes and events in it, the others are just fluff.
As for what they can do in a movie that they couldn't do on TV? Probably nothing but it does sound like it's going to be a crossover between the original cast and the outgoing cast rather than linked to the incoming cast.

'Sex and the City with teenagers'? Ummm, what!?

I will probably watch this solely to see the first gen cast. I disliked series 3 and 4 generally, but as you say Bob they weren't without their highlights. JJ in particular.
