Simpsons might be cancelled by Fox

We're not just talking about breaking even on producing new episodes of the Simpsons, we're talking about Fox losing money to keep the Simpsons going.

I read that differently. That FOX is losing out on a possibility of making MORE money. Because of the syndication deal they can't put it on say FX like Two and a Half Men is. I don't think they are losing money by continuing the Simpsons, they just aren't able to make more.

I don't mean to sound picky regarding verbage, but how can a show that's been on for 20+ years be "cancelled?"

Like any other show...? I don't understand the question. If you stop ordering a new episodes, it's cancelled. Regardless of how long its been on.

While on one hand I've felt Simpsons should have ended long ago. But on the other hand, it would be weird to live in a world without new Simpsons episodes, they've been around for the better part of my life. I almost can't remember a time before the show existed.

Of course, I do remember watching my first Simpsons episode :)

i wonder what kind of impact, if any, this will have on the rumored Simpsons ch.

How about making it black and white for a while? They could save penny (and then some) that way:D
Wait..maybe not:shifty::p
Seriously speaking, while I do like The Simpsons a lot, they cant make it forever..but canceling it because some salary disputes would be rather lame:rolleyes:

I'd just assume they do a series finale and be done with it. After doing a series finale, is the show still cancelled? By your definition, all shows get cancelled, no shows get completed, unless I'm not understanding you right.

You get cancelled if the network stops ordering new episodes but the creators themselves didn't make the decision to end the show. To make a comparison: Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled; Star Trek: The Next Generation was not.

Just because you got to do a series finale, doesn't mean you weren't cancelled. Arrested Development got to do one.

In the end, cancelled means you weren't picked up for more.

It gets more challenging when a show ends on purpose. Like nuBattlestar Galactica. But then, they saw the writing on the wall and knew it was better to go out on their terms than wait for SyFy to just say no more. In other words, BSG would've been cancelled sooner rather than later, so they decided on an end and wrapped it up.

But, yes. In the end, on American TV 99% of all shows are cancelled. They may or may not get to wrap up their story, but in the end, the network doesn't want any more for whatever reason (ratings, expense, etc.)

I don't know if I agree with that. With TNG, everyone's contract was up. It would've cost more to make more shows. And probably no one wanted to foot the extra cash. Better to make a movie.

The casts contracts were for 8 years, not 7. The creators wanted an 8th, but the studio wanted a movie instead. At least that's what I read somewhere yesterday....

I cannot imagine someone getting $8 million a year in salary doing anything other than socking most of it away for the future. Once I had a house and a nice car, I wouldn't know how to spend even half of that. I guess people find a way, but damn. If they can't afford a pay cut, they've been horribly managing their money.

Two words: Faberge Eggs!

I suppose, technically, any show that ends is cancelled, either by the star, the producers or the network. But I understand your point. In fact, it reminds me of how pissed off Jerry Seinfeld got at Larry King when Larry referred to Seinfeld as having been cancelled.

Grammar nitpick because I keep seeing it again and again in this thread: It's canceled. One "L". The other cancelled has no sense of humor.

:p

Let FOX cancel it. Then it can be picked up by a cable outlet where it would probably be more entertaining that it is on FOX.

No. Fox had no creative story input on the show other than occasional minor cosmetic changes. Taking it to a different network would not be the cause of an increase entertainment.

You realized he was joking around and simply giving King a hard time, right?

Ugh... if there's one reason I don't want "The Simpsons" cancelled, it's to make sure Sunday on FOX does not become "Family Guy," "Black Family Guy," "Stone Age Family Guy," and "American Dad."

American Dad has been the most consistently entertaining of MacFarlane's shows, IMO (not including pre-cancellation Family Guy). It's too bad that it'll probably be the first of the three to get cancelled.

I agree that American Dad is the best show of the three. I watched the season premiere of Family Guy last night and couldn't believe how bad the show had become. I enjoyed quite a few episodes last season, but if they can't even muster up something decent for the premiere, it makes me wonder how crappy the rest of the season will be. I'll probably watch a few more to see if it improves, but damn. This show used to be funny. :(

American Dad has always had much more potential on account of being a political satire. The other two shows don't really have a point besides being sitcoms.

Very easily.

From the UK side of the Pond. Doctor Who 1963-1989 Cancelled after a run of 26. True it has become a rare example of show that has been Uncanelled.

But in the case of the simpsons if the actor contracts are up it might be more a case of not picked up rather than cancelled. There is a difference between the two.
