Simpsons/Family Guy crossover

Based on my anecdotal knowledge of the South Park process, they get together on a 'Writer's retreat' sometime before a run of the show to decide the basic plots of the show, but don't actually start writing them until six days before it's supposed to air.

For the first ten or so seasons I listened to the commentary minis at the beginning of the episodes on the DVDs, but apparently for the Christmas Critters episode there was a point three days before the episode aired where they had no idea what they were going to do and were thinking of telling Comedy Central they weren't getting an episode. Also in the McCain/Obama election episode they were considering making two different versions of the episode depending on the winner before it was obvious Obama was going to win.

They've also remarked that they think some of their best episodes came from having no idea what they were going to do and just writing, like they did with the Jewbilee episode.

South Park is doing a weird continuity thing this season, every episode refers to the previous episode.

It's kinda cool that South Park is pulling a Seinfeld season 4.

They should do a backwards episode like the Season 9 Seinfeld about India and Sue Ann's wedding. Although for all I know they've already done a backwards episode after more than 17 years on the air and doing just about every idea both old and topical that they can think of.

The cameo by American Dad!'s Roger was pretty sweet. Roger's always awesome. :)

I'd watch a show with Roger, Bart, Stewie, Bender & Daria, I wash trying to think of a female character from King Of The Hill I liked, oh never mind RIP Brittany Murphy/Luanne. :(

I liked the crossover! :bolian:

South Park managed to do an Avatar parody before it was released, based on trailers and rumors, and nailed it.

Last night's episode of Simpsons was decent. It wasn't that funny but it actually contained some relevant and accurate satire. That's exactly how fast food chains treat their franchises.

The Family Guy writers are still under the impression that the weird Stewie gay stuff is funny.

Edit: Now that I think about it, this week's Simpsons was like a King of the Hill episode with Simpsons characters.

Ok, I love the way this episode opened by acknowledging Matt Groening's quote. "The show out of ideas teams up with the show out of episodes".

Edit: Also love that scene where they walked past the dog. Randomly referencing the saddest moment in any episode of either series. :)

I don't know. Seymour the Dog kept being brought back so many times in the DVD movies and Comedy Central seasons that it basically stripped that episode of whatever poignancy it may have once had.

Probably so, but then the declining standard of writing on The Simpsons long ago robbed the series of its classic quality. Tonight's crossover wasn't even as good as the Family Guy crossover, but at least there were a few good and funny scenes.

Kang and Kodos have been females of their species all this time? Nice touch.

Not as good as classic Simpsons, but first episode I legitimately enjoyed in quite a while.

Last episode I legitimately enjoyed, I think it was in season 15. The school was split between boys and girls and Lisa pretended to be a boy and got the nickname Toilet.

That's probably the only episode after season 8 that was as good as the early seasons.

The only post-cancel episodes of Futurama I've seen are the Yahweh TV-movie and the last six or so episodes of the series so I haven't had the opportunity to be fatigued of the character.

I liked it but it was only worth the occasional chuckle; I liked that the bunnies from Life is Hell were the creatures.

I loved the Futurama crossover! Not only was it a nerdgasm to see the two casts interacting there were some really funny jokes and gags in there too.

I noted that "Simpsorama" was written by J. Stewart Burns, who also wrote the classic "Roswell That Ends Well." It seems an appropriate choice, but of course the episode wasn't nearly on the same level. It had some nice ideas and some nice nostalgic moments, but it didn't have the heart that characterized the best episodes of both shows, and had a bit too much of the callousness and cruel humor that seemed to dominate the later seasons of both. And they tried to cram in so many Futurama characters and references that most of them ended up kind of superficial.

And I suppose it's pointless even to bring up continuity, but both shows have previously been established as fictional within each other's universes. So it feels more like an "imaginary story" than anything else.

And it was weird seeing the flesh-toned Futurama characters interacting with the yellow-skinned Springfieldians. I've always thought of the two shows as having the same design style, but seeing them side by side brought out the differences.

Although I did enjoy Zoidberg popping up just to say "and now Zoidberg has a chance to say something." Just because it is a total Zoidberg moment.

And they left the door open, so to speak, for future...rama ;) crossovers. So the writer who scripted "Roswell That Ends Well" wrote this one, too? Ah, that explains the similarity of Bender's "fate".

Sincerely,

Bill

I agree the Family Guy crossover was better. Kind of an uphill battle as Simpsons and Futurama are so part of their respective settings which don't really mix well.

No relation?

(just a rhetorical joke, no elaboration necessary)
