No, I generally don't like the filmmakers' decisions (thinking ST is only about Kirk and Spock )...

:wtf:

What exactly is Star Trek about? Any choice of characters would've precluded other characters from being the focus of the movies.

I think it would be a lot more interesting if they further developed the existing universe with new characters.

I don't. You have more than enough characters that you can tweak to any given stories needs.

"Yes" and "no" aren't enough choices for me.

I liked the first reboot movie overall. There were things I didn't like about it, but taken as a whole, I liked the movie and was glad that new Star Trek was being made.

I thought "Into Darkness" was a good action movie but terrible Star Trek.

Do I like the reboot movies? Yes for the first one, and No for the second one. I guess we'll get the tie-breaker in 2016; let's hope this one has a decent script.

Liked '09, with reservations. Opted to see Fast and Furious 6 in theaters rather than ID, and while I didn't love the former, a subsequent rental of the latter validated my decision. While not awful, ID not only left me feeling I'd never choose to see it again, it also soured my already dubious enthusiasm for future viewings of '09.

So, while I'm open to the third movie being great, so far, I must vote No.

In a word: Yes. These new movies are watchable by a new generation. Although I love the old Treks, if it doesn't evolve and stay current with the times, Trek dies.
I don't entirely disagree, but the Abrams movies try so hard to be hip and lightning-paced I suspect they'll date poorly. And, frankly, I'm not sure I feel a need for new Trek. For a variety of reasons, I'm much more invested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now, and if you offered me a trade of kibosh-ing that franchise while reviving Trek on the small and big screens simultaneously, even with secondary Netflix shows and the like, my vote goes for the MCU, no question.

Most of the world and especially the target audience for these new movies doesn't know much beyond what is currently coming out in theaters, if that much even. Maybe they'll have heard of pointy ears and the words Spock/Kirk but most of the target audience hasn't watched TOS. It was an attempt to bring the old stuff to new audiences.

That kind of shoots down your argument. They don't need to know Kirk's serial number, they just need to a guy named Kirk is in Star Trek.

There's a difference between vaguely hearing of a guy named Kirk and "thinking ST is only about Kirk and Spock."

If Kirk and Spock are the characters who come to mind when someone says "Star Trek", even if you're not quite sure who they are, then yes it is.

I think Kirk and Spock are the first characters that come to mind when most people think about Trek, but I think that has perhaps been slowly changing as new shows have come along and characters have become more varied.

And my point was that the only reason Kirk/Spock still come to mind for the general audience, which wasn't around for TOS, is because of these new movies. If they rebooted it with a different set of characters, then those characters would be who 98% of the world would think of when someone says "Star Trek", not characters from TOS.

People know about Kirk and Spock with out having actually seen TOS because they're part of the pop culture landscape. Comedians reference the characters in their acts. People call the President of the USA a Vulcan and draw him to look like Spock. And the audience gets the reference. How many of those people are fans of Star Trek or even SF?

No, I think regular people think of Kirk and Spock as synonymous with ST. Comedy shows have always riffed on TOS much more than TNG. And there was that recent German car ad with Shatner and Nimoy, which shows their characters are still in the public mind. Takei's recent status as a minor pop culture icon has probably also helped.
I think there still exists a cultural archetype of Worf going on about honour, but I can't remember the last time I saw a reference to Picard let alone other TNG characters (outside of BBT).

No.

Pure garbage.

They've turned Trek into the very mindless shit Star Trek was meant to step away from.

Tell me more!

Oh for the love of everything please no, he's written novels of drivel on the subject already, please don't make us sit through it all again. He hates it, we get it.
A question was asked. I assumed it was open to honest opinions. I now have it reaffirmed that some only want to hear an assenting response.

Apparently hearing something otherwise offends certain parties' tender sensibilities.
