Sigourney Weaver Opts Out of Alien and Ghostbusters Sequels

There'd still be a need for Weaver's character if Oscar is a ghostbuster in the third movie.

Gotta say I'm glad she's not back for the Alien movie. A bit disappointed about Ghostbusters but it's easier for her not to be back in there again for them to explain why she's apart of whatever's going on now.

The Alien prequel has absolutely no need for Ripley. I'd like them to do something that doesn't involve an excuse to shoe-horn in old characters/actors with flimsy explanations like the overdone ancestor angle and how they happen to look exactly alike but slightly older.

Sigourney Weaver intv. on why opt out

MTV News tracked down Weaver at Comic Con, and asked her whether she would be involved in the upcoming Alien film,

30 second commercial then 27 second video with Sigourney.

the io9 writer mentions and I agree:
Hopefully, this is just one of many signs that Scott is genuinely looking to tell an interesting story set in this universe, rather than simply milking the franchise.

Looking back at her talking about the ALIEN franchise when talking about "Alien Ressurection" You can kinda of understand why she won't be in the movie

"I heard they were gonna do Alien VS predator which I thought was just awful"

Sigourney Weaver was predicting the future when she said Alien VS predator would be awful

It would be 7 more years till "AVP" (Alien Resurrection was released in 1997) and AVP came out in 2004

Quite frankly, I'll be amazed if the new Ghostbusters movie actually gets made.

Agreed. This has been on-and-off for years. The video game has reinvigorated the franchise, but I thought it was Akroyd himself who said that that was the sequel and that a movie will never be made.

The Aliens movie is going to be a prequel, right?

If so, and unless they planned an "old Ripley back-in-time" type storyline (ala Star Trek), Weaver would have no place in the new movie.

Hey, they could have cloned her again... or for the first time if it's a prequel. What I'd like to see in alien 5 is some background on the crashed ship from the first film. I may be imagining things but iirc that ship was piloted by another alien species other than the xenomorphs.

I'd love to see this too!

Would be interesting to see that and how the Company knew the ship and the aliens were there to begin with.

They could always do something "fresh and original" --- like time traveling back to try to prevent the original mission. ;)

The ship was controlled by a non-human race that wasn't xenomorph, as evidenced by the massive elephant-esque skeleton sitting in what appears to be a control station. I believe they're called 'Space Jockeys', either by the fandom or as an in-universe name. I have to admit, I'd be curious to see what these guys are like.

As others have rightly pointed out, Weaver not being in a prequel to Alien is a non-issue. She shouldn't be in it, nor does she want to be. Ripley is done with aliens. Having said that, providing it's a good story, I wouldn't be adverse to seeing a film with Ripley-8 and Call and no aliens whatsoever.

As for Ghostbusters, if the story is really going to be about the old guard handing over the reigns to the new blood, then I can't really see Dana being much a part of that...unless Zuul dumps Gozer and makes a solo comeback. ;)
Still, there's nothing in what she says that precludes her involvement, just that she's not aware that they're looking to get her involved.

Ash- I'm reading Chrono metric particles from that derelict ship

Dallas- Time travel...........

Ripley- That's what the Alien's came here to do, to prevent the first mission!"
