Signs that autumn has arrived.

(Well, for those of us in the norhtern hemisphere anyway.)

In a post in the lounge I wrote about a couple of these;
  • Wearing long trousers.
  • Solar powered garden-lights not being very effective any more.
  • Taking comforters out of summer storage.

What are your signs?

The colours of the leaves changing and the weather being noticably cooler.

Being able to mow the lawn without getting completely drenched in sweat or overheating within 5 minutes. :D (Hey, I'm in the South, it's frickin' HOT here in the summer!)

^I hear you. It's hot here until late October. Autumn is when I don't get a third degree burn from the car door. I merely wince slightly.

Autumn is when the Halloween decorations appear in the stores--a few days before the Christmas stuff shows up.

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did Summer go so quickly
Was it something that you said?
Lovers walk along a shore
And leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway
Or the fragment of a song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the Autumn leaves were turning
To the colour of her hair

Surely those depend on where you are, after all whilst it might be summer it might not be hot enough to stop wearing long trousers.

But I'll give you solar power, you start generating less power.

Sure it depends on the geography of your region and the distance from the pole... Which is why I ask for your signs ;)

I'd hate to be B.J. in the summer though! (that's two of the things I dislike most: gardening and being in the sun).

For me it's more like, "Winter will be here soon enough. I'm just not going to cut the grass anymore."

The leaves started changing last week, at least from what I can see from my window. People are offering crabapples on Freecycle.

For me fall is about nature. I love the smell of ripe crabapples, and that in conjunction with dead leaves and a nip in the air that says "September has arrived!" just perks me up. This is my favorite time of year - not too hot, not too cold, no more mosquitoes, the colors are fantastic, and the winter constellations are returning.

The stores here are already having sales on Halloween candy.

Surely one of the best things about Autumn and Winter not having to cut the grass.
For me, typically it *stops* growing in the summer for the most part due to the heat, or at least slows significantly. It starts growing like crazy again in fall once temperatures start to dip.

^Here, too, and it's effing ridiculous.

Fall will come soon enough here - not ready to think about it yet.

It's not really ridiculous that Christmas stuff is appearing in shops already. Part of the reason is to try and help spread the cost. I work in retail and it's the same story every year

Easter Sunday, despite them being on sale from Jan do you have any Easter Eggs left.

1st Dec do you have any advent calanders left despite them being on sale since September.

People tend to leave things to the last minute and are surprised when stores have sold out. Of course there is another reason for why some lines start appearing early, Christmas is one of the key tradin periods for stores and as such they sell more, however the distibrution centres can only hold so much stock so sometimes they have to push stock out to stores to ensure they have enough space to meet forecasted demand.

People start emailing me about teaching (academic).

This end of summer for me is the last week of this month when teaching starts again (I don't teach between april - end of September).
