Shuttle WIP (July Challenge)

Maverisms

It's been an axiom of starship design, since at least TNG, that Federation ships shape their war fields with their hulls. It's always bugged me a bit that shuttles don't seem to do that. It's obvious why that is; building a practical mock up for shooting would be a pain. Andrew Probert’s original TNG shuttle ideas bear that out.

Of course, I work in computers, so I don't have that issue. :)

So I started thinking about this challenge with that in mind. As with the methods of the real production crews I wanted the design to echo the Ship I was designing for. So I spent a lot of time thinking about which ship to work with. In the end, all of the Enterprises but C, E and J have a wealth of shuttles (NX_01 doesn't but at its size it doesn't need any) and I didn't feel any jazz for doing a work bee (especially with Any Probert's Sphinx out there. Somehow, that thing feels like a closing argument. "This is a work bee. 'Nuff said).

While the E has potential, the Type 11 and the Argo pretty much define the aesthetic for that ship. I wanted to do something different.

So I settled on the F. Then I sat back to think about what elements to 'echo.' I dumped the ring right away. I have an idea or two but most of them just don't feel right for shuttle craft. They seem like larger ships.

Thinking about warp field shaping and echoes led to an epiphany of sorts. The element least echoed in all shuttle designs...

The saucer.

That led me to choose Adam's F over Cryptics. Using a wedge saucer as a start point would only call to mind the Type 9 "speedboat" shuttle. Given what I had in mind a perfectly circular design might have been a problem, but I wanted it to be the least wedge like I could do and still get useable space inside.

Of course I wanted it to look good, and it does... to me. Whether it does beyond that sample is not for me to judge.

It's still in progress, and the final image will probably be radically different. I haven't settled on what I want to do. My first idea feels too similar to the SOTL 1701-E shuttle bay image. But I'll think of something, I'm sure.

Definitely different! It looks a bit squashed at the moment, though. I'm pretty sure you intend to mirror the warp nacelle to the left side, but right now the asymmetry looks pretty interesting!

It isn't so much "squashed" as it is "wide". A result of going for the saucer motif. I'd pondered pulling the nacelles in close, but I decided I wanted it to follow more of the starship rules, so they had to have a clear view around the saucer.

In scale it is only slightly longer than the Type 11. At some point I need to mock up the scale vs. the Delta Flyer. At the Flyer's largest production scale, it just clears Voyager's shuttle bay, and if this also fits, I'll call it good.

Oh, and the other nacelle is there, you just can't see it from that angle. Here are five views:

I'd make 'em smaller but a storms rolling in and my power's been flaky lately.

Some very cool shapes there for a shuttle.

If you stuck a deflector on it, took away the cockpit window and threw a bridge on top that would be a pretty snazzy little battleship/scout/whatever too.

Sadly, texturing is not one of my skills. I've got a long way to go on that front. But the final image I have in mind is going to be stylized to a certain extent. I never got into 3d to photo-real images. It's only recently I decided that learning how might help me do what I want to do.

The general form of the shuttle is similar to an idea I have for federation escort/system patrol craft. One reason I haven't followed up on that design is that I want the final ship to be--primarily--a science platform. I'm of the opinion the exploration is always Starfleet's first mission and that would show even in their defensive platforms.

I like this approach. I could see it as a TNG shuttle. I think for it to be on later ships like voyager it would need to be narrower. This is a really cool design

Maybe a Captain's Yacht for a smaller ship (Norway-Class) or one of the newer ships from "Star Trek: Online"?

I'm a TNG kinda guy. I never really liked the speedboat shuttle from Voyager. I think it is due to my helicopter background. (Not to say I'm an expert, or to twist the discussion to helos. I grew up around them). A shuttle is supposed to be a utility craft, and the speedboat seems more like a pleasure craft.

This design is meant to carry stuff. The Defiant style housings are designed to move as much equipment as possible out of the habitation space.

Part of me wants to dig into detailing it more, but it is for the challenge, and there's not much time left. I gotta get to work on the rest of the scene.
