Shows you're discovering/rediscovering on DVD

I have discovered a few shows through DVD, such as:

Deadwood. One of the most gripping, intense dramas I've ever seen.

Slings and Arrows
. As a former theater geek, I found this just funny as hell.

The Last Detective. A quiet, understated mystery series that was refreshingly deep in exploring the main character.

Secret Agent (aka Danger Man). Hubby and I are both HUGE Prisoner fans, so seeing the precursor was a must. While parts of it are a bit slow, and a bit dated, other aspects were surprisingly contemporary and sophisticated. Not a bad spy show.

Wonderfalls.
A marvelously dark, quirky, fantasy show. Similar to Pushing Daisies but much more in the "real" world---er, aside from the talking plastic toys, and what not. A real gem.

I consider LOST to be the best show of all time. It's going into its final season so you can watch it all without worrying about a rushed ending or dangling plots or a series that goes nowhere. It's a highly serialized show and I guarantee you can't just watch one episode at a time. :)

How about we watch where the last 18 hours go before commenting like that.

Just because they are ending it on their terms doesn't mean it will end well.

Discovered or rediscovered on DVD:
Strange Report
Redcap
Special Branch
Public Eye
Thriller
Out
When the Boat Comes In
Secret Army
Spearhead
Gideon's Way
The Zoo Gang
Manhunt
The Power Game
Upstairs Downstairs
Enemy at the Door
The Lotus Eaters
Gangsters
Big Breadwinner Hog
Budgie
Strangers
The Sandbaggers
Press Gang
Space Patrol
Ace of Wands
Arthur of the Britons
Beasts

I actually discovered this on WGN America and YouTube, but I just bought all six seasons on DVD so I think that counts. ;)

I'm Netflixing ROME from a few years back on HBO. Watched the first two episodes over the weekend.
Also picked up S1 of TUDORS and watched the first episode as well.
I'll be making my way through these two in December then come 2010 my plan is to work through STARGATE SG-1. I basically bought it blind having only seen a few episodes. Amazon had all 10 seasons for $104 and it came in over the weekend.

I was also thinking about renting (or borrowing from a friend):

Dollhouse
24
Lost
Veronica Mars

Can anybody recommend or warn me away from them?
Dollhouse, YES
LOST, YES
Veronica Mars, YES

24 NO?
I only saw season one. Every following season is the same thing ala Survivor or Amazing Race. I didn't love it enough to watch more but I don't dislike it enough to tell you to avoid it so I just didn't endorse it, till you asked for more that is.

Farscape

I'm about four episodes in. John Crichton really is kind of twitch, isn't he? I kind of like that. Usually people in these space operas are so staid and formal.

I suppose he is. I do like Crichton better than, say, Jack O'Neill, who is little more than a jackass who can't take anything seriously. (God only knows how O'Neill made it up the chain of command without getting his ass thrown in the stockade.) Crichton can be serious when the situation warrants it. O'Neill just bitches about everything. Which is sad, really, since otherwise SG-1 is a very good series.

I've discovered and enjoyed a few shows courtesy of DVDs/Netflix:

Dexter - I blew through the first two seasons thanks to the online streaming option on Netflix. In a happy accident, I finished up just a few weeks before season 3 was released on DVD so I netflix'd that season, as well. Got caught up and can now enjoy season 4 first-run.

Friday Night Lights - I also enjoyed the first two seasons via Netflix. Was able to watch season 3 first-run on NBC and now I'm waiting for season 4 (which I believe is already airing on DirecTV but I'll have to wait a bit longer since I don't use that service).

True Blood - Got hooked on season 1, courtesy of Netflix once again. Couldn't wait for HBO to get around to releasing season 2, so I restored to... alternative... methods. The wait for season 3 is painful.

Veronica Mars - this was a blind buy. The first two seasons were on sale fairly cheap. I'd heard all the critics rave about the show so I went ahead and bought them. Enjoyed the series and was able to watch the 3rd season first-run on the CW.

I've been watching LOST from the beginning on ABC, but I am currently re-watching the entire series via DVD, in anticipation of the final season. I'm approaching the end of season 2.

This was the year of Farscape and Babylon 5 for me. B5 I had watched before I bought the DVDs but Farscape I've been enjoying rediscovering since I bought the sets. Still a great series.

Each season (or Day) of 24 is NOT the same. As with any serial, some episodes are okay, and some are mindblowing. Overall, I enjoyed every single season, each for different reasons. I recommend it, and further, I highly recommend adding back in the deleted scenes as you watch each episode, where that function is available. Unlike other deleted scene extras, almost every one is staged and scored before it's cut for time, and really adds to the flow of the episode.

I've seen a half dozen episodes of iCarly and have to agree that it's a pretty decent show. It's so much better than Drake and Josh, I can't stand Drake and Josh, I watched a couple episodes and found Miranda Coscrove to be the best part of of that show.

Earlier this year in the summer when I was house sitting for family friends I watched the entire series of Trailer Park Boys and fell in love with the series. It's awesomely funny. Currently I've been watching Curb Your Enthusiasm on DVD. Just watched season four and five, waiting for 1,2,3,and 6 to complete the series. I watched season seven online and thought it was outstanding.

I've been wanting to re-watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer recently so I was thinking of borrowing the series from a friend. Might re-watch Doctor Who Series 1-4 over the Christmas holiday as well.

I'm hopeful. They've had forever to get their shit together.

I've discovered almost all of the shows I watch through buying DVDs either blindly or on word of mouth. This year alone I've taken the gamble with B5, DS9, NuBSG and Doctor Who both new and old (previously I'd only seen a couple of the newer episodes on TV, but didn't get into them), and enjoyed all of them. Next year I'm going to give Stargate SG-1 a try as well, though it won't be a blind buy, as I've seen a dozen or so episodes on TV and enjoyed them.

I know upthread I mentioned buying the Stargate SG-1 complete 10 season set last month from Amazon.com for $104. That it was my 2010 goal to watch that as I've not seen more than a dozen or so eps.

Well now I have Farscape the entire series coming as well. I placed it in my cart at the same time as Stargate. It was also $104 then. Now its been dropped to $58. So I just ordered that as well. Not sure when I'll get to it but I'll be rediscovering that show as I've not seen past season 2 and have forgotten most of it so that'll be a fun rediscovery.

I thought Moffat as showrunner on Doctor Who would be reason to NOT expect a Coupling special any time soon

I didn't mean that. I just meant it might spawn DVD reissues and renewed interest in the show in general.

Ah yes, a true treasure from my country. I live in terror of the day Fox announces it's doing an Americanized remake. It would completely miss the whole point if they ever did that.

The most recent series I watched on DVD was True Blood season one. I love watching shows on DVD--you can sit down and just power through several episodes at a time. I did that with the first season of Gossip Girl. It's a great way to watch a show. I probably won't do it during the regular TV season (I watch too much TV as it is :o  ) but over the summer I might try to watch How I Met Your Mother (I have the first season) or Damages (same thing--I've got the first season).

ETA: Save for Doctor Who Series 4 (of nuWho) and the latest Torchwood miniseries, I've caught all the Dr. Who/Torchwood seasons on DVD.

So far the only shows I rediscovered this year on dvd/blu ray is Star Trek TOS and TNG. I bought The Best Of TOS and The Best Of TNG and TOS Seasons 1&2 and soon 3, and The Animaited Series. Those are the only shows I have rediscoverd on dvd and blu ray. I'm thinking of getting TNG if it comes on blu ray, if not then I will buy the dvds, I'm just waiting until after Season 3 of TOS to see if they have plans on releasing TNG on blu ray or not. Anyways I do own other shows on dvd/blu ray besides just Star Trek and they are: Everybody Loves Raymond seasons 1 & 2,Friends seasons 1 & 2, Gilligions Island season 1,Unsolved Mystries. I would like to get Amercian Idol on dvd/blu ray but it would be later because my main focus right now is Star Trek shows.
