Very nice. I like it!

So what does the symbol mean? Or is it the same as the text you will have tattooed above it?

Quite similar actually. The research I did on it turns up that its used in Chinese cultures alot.

Phoenix meaning rebirth and new life

Dragon meaning strength and power

Together they make one awesome symbol.

I will post the info once I can find it again...

Found this
The phoenix or Fenghuang represents high virtue and grace or the female force. Together with the dragon, it is a perfect balance of the soul or union of man and woman. Many times, a dragon and phoenix yin yang symbolic gift is given to a newly married couple to signify their union.
Often the dragon and phoenix hold jointly a sphere. This symbolizes that although the dragon and phoenix are independent of each other, they share a common goal. Together the union will hold true, however, if separated their goals cannot be met and in essence the sphere drops.

Oh, I'm so glad this is here. Next year, I want to update mine. I need something on my back. I don't know if I want to extend the existing one across the back or if I want to do something down the spine. I was thinking of doing something down the spine, nothing large, I'm thinking small, yet running down the center down to my lower back, for an effect that looks similar to a caduceus. As you can see, both are the tribal family, so I need to stay in that arena. Advise please!

This is from September

This is from about 4 years ago, when I wasn't as wide in the back or as developed in my shoulders, but it's the only one that really captures them both at once:

Nice! I say go down the spine. Later on you can extend the shoulder portions as well...that would look amazing!

My friend has a similar sun tattoo on his arm...

It's not the first time there's a thread concerning our body-art, so it won't be the last time I post this:

I can't believe there are so few responses.
It seems to me that tattooing is extremely common now, at least from what I've seen at the gym.
I have a tattoo. I had it done about two months ago and I'm...over 50.
You're never too old to try something new. :)

I expected this thread to fill out quickly....do nerds just not like tats or what?

I like that one, Shaw. Do I recognize the symbol or do I just like the look of it?

Here is mine, this is on my right calf. Bicycle gear due to my love of all things with gears (bicycles, motorcycles, engines), Psi symbol for my doctorate in Psychology, the red/black is a traditional motif from the Mapuche indians of South America (my Grandmother), and the surrounding art is inspired by the Marquesan Islands, south pacific where my grandfather was sailor.

IHR -
I agree.
And where are the women?
I did take photos of mine but I don't like them. I'll see if I can take better ones for this thread.

TSQ has a really nice one she's been planning on extending, but she hasn't been around much lately.

I have never been interested in getting a tattoo myself, but there are certainly some interesting ones here. I am curious about the Trek-related ones. How did you decide on what image(s) to get done?

This is quite a fascinating image. I like it that you put a great deal of thought into all aspects of this design, and that it has so much meaning to you.

Thanks. My philosophy is that this is permanent, so it better be meaningful for you for the rest of your life. I also highly recommend finding the best artist to help you, as that makes all the difference.

Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me?
Ok, I have The words sinner and saint on reach under-forearm, a battle axe, Odin, The devil, a skull with a dragon coming out of it, a dragon head, a cobra, my initials and a lion head. Vicodin, youthful stupidity and booze had a lot to do with the cobra and dragon, I'm stoked to get them covered with something that isn't lame!

I only have two pics that aren't that great.

This is the first tattoo I got when I was 19. It's on my left ankle.
Yes, it's a band tattoo, which everyone always says is a bad idea. 8 years later, I don't regret it.

And I got this one when I was 21. It's mid to low middle of my back (and yeah, I am that white, it's not filled in, but that is pink highlighter at the top of the pic...my boyfriend at the time was drawing on my back). I got it a year to the day after I tried to off myself. I got a lily because the song Lily (my one and only) was playing when the paramedics started busting in, and it was a totally incongruous song for the occasion, and actually kinda made me smile.

Since then, I've added the words "Stuck on my eyes" underneath in my own handwriting (from the Bowie song Five Years) when I was 25.

A few months ago I got the poem The Finest of the Breed by Bukowski tattooed down my spine, starting at the nape of my neck and ending right above the lily.

I have plans for many more whenever I have the money...

I love this, I think its wonderful when people actually put thought behind their art.

Thats really deep hon, glad you made it thought that dark time. I myself came close to doing the same.
