Should they remake a classic episode as a future movie?

If we take the original 79 episodes as "literature", like Sherlock Holmes books, or James Bond stories, what would be the harm in remaking an episode as a full length feature?

I'm thinking episodes like Amok Time, City on the Edge of Forever, Devil in the Dark, The Doomsday Machine and Arena. The real classics.

The more I think about it, the more I love the idea.

It's a real risk, but what a pay-off if it succeeds.
You know, this is an interesting topic, but it isn't really about this movie. It's more of a Future of Trek subject, don't you think? I can suggest you restart it over there or I can move it for you, if you like.

You know, I wasn't too sure which place it should go. If you think it should be moved and are happy to do it, please do!

Yeah, but if JJ Abrams suddenly announced this you'd say you love it, so that's not evidence of much ;)

Yeah, but only because I'm paid a great deal to do so.

 Why do people keep saying this crap to you? It's like you're not allowed an opinion.

Well, first because it's a rule of the Internet that no third party of note who is not present in a conversation is to be written of in anything other than the most mean and dismissive of terms (with the sole exception of Bruce Campbell), while any bumpkin who is a participant is offended if the tripe from their keyboard is treated as less than equal in perspicacity and insight to the very wisest and knowledgable of men.

And secondly because I'm an arrogant asshole and they don't like me. Go figure.

I think it might be a better fit over there, so let me transplant it for you. Hang on...

Kirk was supposedly a Junior officer on the Farragut when he encountered
the cloud-creature that killed his then Captain, Garrovik. That one could be done, possibly without altering any timelines. Of course, if the new movie places Kirk on Pike's Enterprise when he's fresh out of the academy, then this all gets blown away, I guess...

No for two reasons:

1. I've already seen all the episodes. No need to retell those stories.

2. As evidenced by the last two TNG films, a movie should have a grander, more epic scope than an episode. Insurrection and Nemesis were just big, bloated episodes and they kind of stunk up the joint.
Agreed. TV episodes on the big screen don't usually work well.
I want "to boldly go where no man/one has gone before" by trying to "seek out new life and new civilizations."

Doubly agreed. If the episodes really required a re-imagining, they wouldn't have spent so much time and effort remastering the beloved TOS with new CGI and rendering it in HD.

Also... there's some episodes that seemed a little iffy by 60s standards, so I don't see how they'd work now (Spock's Brain and Catspaw come instantly to mind...).

The bigwigs seriously need to stop remaking everything that has come before and come up with something great and original so in another 40 years they'll be arguing whether or not to "re-imagine" it for the whippersnappers of the day ;)

Ooh, now there's a thought.
