She constantly put her life on the line for any crew member or any life form that needed it.

Which is exactly what she did in "Before Dishonor". Lady Q warned her that this Borg vessel was so dangerous that Q himself couldn't bear to be there to watch the inevitable unfold. The Q knew she'd put her life on the line once again. And she did!

Someone who continually laughs in danger's face, ignoring all warnings, is eventually going to get burned.

Or do you want a female captain who leads a perpetual, charmed life? Immortal Janeway who, like her mentor, Leonardo da Vinci, cannot ever die? :wtf:

Re: So what are you reading now? (Part 3)

I'm annoyed that no-one mentioned Babylon 5's Susan Ivanova in their "strong woman" lists. Tough as old leather and utterly crazy too. How dare they carry on for a whole season without her!

Ahem. Of course, that was a week and nearly 400 posts back.

Oops! Sorry, Steve :)

Oh, and Elaithin? I read ages ago that Sir Patrick Moore stopped watching Star Trek "when they put a woman in charge" and "started being politically correct". But since he's about 167 we forgive him. Product of another era

(I think I read it in an interview with Radio Times to commorate the some anniversary of his stargazing show. I've probably garbled the quotes)

Oh, well that it explains it.

*Sits back and waits for the next wave of newly-registered people to post hard-to-read nonsense that has many words but says little.*

I suspect many of those newly-registered Janeway-loving people are actually all the same person.

I'm not fooled, whoever you are!

You know, back when I was a fanzine editor and publisher in the pre-Internet 80s and early 90s, notes like those you mention used to turn up in my letterbox, attached to (often hand-written) fanfic manuscripts. The owners would wonder why I was so mean as to be disinterested in adding their Most Important Fanfic Story to the upcoming issue of my well-respected fanzine.

Such manuscripts can now be uploaded to the Internet, saving many trees.

Reading through this thread for days upon days now, it seems to me that there's really only one solution to bringing Janeway back.

An anthology! With multiple tales resurrecting Janeway! So that readers who think that Janeway should come back this way or that way or the other way won't feel left out. With a story of this import, with a resurrection of this magnitude, one telling simply will not suffice! If one story doesn't work for a reader, mayhap another will. A dozen stories of Janeway's triumphant resurrection and the mystery cults that arise around her immortal hair. We could have writers like Christopher do a serious and droll pseudoscientific take on Janeway's return, while others like William Leisner might do a pisstake on the topic. The stories could range from comedy to tragedy to farce. Perhaps one might even be a spammish word salad. Some would be offended. Some would be amused. All would be entertained. Call it The Living Janeway, Variations in F-Minor.

The solution!

I'm still a little shocked that more than one person has registered on this board to simply post in this thread and antagonize everyone.

Then talk to your Mod or Administrator either that or stop making unfounded accusations. Just because you don't like Janeway, doesn't mean that others feel the same way or that you have the majority of fans that want her dead. What is true is that the majority of Janeway fans were driven away from the Trek BBS years ago. We're back now.

Which people are these? I haven't noticed a problem.

Actually, several one-time poster messages seem to have vanished in the last few hours. I just went back to collect you some names (such as Xorro and LynnEGib, but they have written much more than one line). Maybe I dreamt it, but it seemed to me there was a run of strangely phrased one-liners from first-time posters here today, which is why I commented. Maybe the posters came back and deleted their efforts?

Hehehe. Hopefully Rosalind can confirm that some duplicate-identity posters deleted their efforts in the last few hours? Because I reckon I saw several recent short posts that are now gone.

Brit, this is bizarre! Is KingDaniel on record as a Janeway hater?

No one drove you (or anyone) away last time, or the time before that. Or the time before that. When the latest "Save Janeway" thread runs dry, the "Save Janeway" supporters drift back to their regular haunts and their beloved fanfic. The ST fans who regularly read and enjoy licensed ST fiction stay around and continue to post in all the other TrekLit posts.

I wouldn't call it antagonizing. Most of the one-off posts by newbies (who may or may not all be the same person) have been polite.

It's when people try to pin Janeway's death on gigantic anti-feminist conspiracies and declare that people who don't want Janeway back are all sexist that might be considered antagonistic.

Or funny

I must admit right now, before anyone goes searching, that I have made some fairly strong anti-Janeway comments in the past.

I have also compared her to Peggy Hill on numerous occasions.

Janeway has a special way of winding me up and getting under my skin (something TV/film villains frequently fail to do  ) but I must admit she always does what she thinks it right. Even when it's not.

Yes she's flawed, but Star Trek is a more interesting place with her about.

Janeway is frolicking with the Q.

The truth is, we don't know that at all. At the end of the book Lady Q escorts Janeway's spirit to an unspecified destination. The end. Concluding that Janeway is one of the Q now or simply among them is not supported in PAD's text. We don't know where Lady Q took her.

We know Lady Q took Janeway somewhere, though, and the fact that she is somewhere means she "ain't" dead. :)

In response to a few other posters a page or so back, I realize that some of the old timers on this forum resent the sudden influx of Voyager and Janeway fans. That is obvious. Perhaps you do look forward to the day when it is just the "good old boys" here once again. That's fine and dandy for the TrekBBS. But it isn't so fine and dandy for PB if only the "old faithful" bunch buy their books. No matter how well the current novels are selling, they would love to sell more. That's the nature of the business. They are looking to expand their market into new areas and to new readers.

Bringing Janeway back in the Voyager relaunch would mean that the "good old boys" will buy the books (because they buy everything), and that a whole new, very interested audience will start buying them, too. The same rationale is true for branching out from the Destiny story line. Why have three series caught up in one plot?

I invoke the 45th Rule of Acquisition: Expand, or die!

Every women I have been in school with, work at NASA with, who is activity into science and into trek, Everyone that i have talked with Praise the Janeway character and the power, the role model, and the strength she shows to women, especially women in science and exploration.

That's really cool. When I was in school I had no such inspiration and even though I'm a software developer (the only female one in my group in fact) it wasn't so much as inspiration that started me down that path as much as chance followed by a "why not moment" followed by some hard work. It's good to know that younger women don't have to wait so long for the why not moment thanks to characters like Janeway.

Inspirational or not Janeway remains a legal property and no one is going to be making any money off of her if she remains dead. If Pocket doesn't bring her back in the next few years then someone sometime will.

Of course, selfish little consumer that I am (I recently purchased and watched the entire Boston Legal series after being amused by a few episodes a friend had) I would like to be buying books featuring her right now. I guess I'll just continue to read fanfiction until that day comes. :)

Actually it's not so fine and dandy for the TrekBBS. While I can't speak for the entire moderating staff a discussion board like this needs a constant influx of new members to keep things fresh and interesting. Regulars eventually move on to other things or lessen the amount of posts - that's only natural. But newer fans whether they're fans that believe Pocket should bring back Janeway, or fans that believe TOS is the only "true" Trek or even fans of the prehensile plant keep the board alive.

That's just my two cents which wouldn't even get you a cup of leola root coffee. :)
