It is ultimately like most Star Trek shows. A ship and the crew, doing things. People already like the ship (the Enterprise) and the new versions of the old characters (Pike, Spock and #1) have been well received. They just need couple of more characters, Boyce maybe, unless he has retired, and some new ones which they can develop freely. Nhan could return to Enterprise, the character has gotten some developement and seems to be liked well enough.
Or perhaps Dr. Piper from WNMHGB could take over. I wouldn't mind seeing Yeoman Colt return as well. Regardless, I don't think it is a problem of content but of interest. However...
It is true that having two 'ship shows' might be somewhat difficult to differentiate, but I don't see that as a huge problem. Maybe the Discovery could remain more modern and experimental series where they try new things and have serialised seasons, whereas the Pike show could be more traditional, episodic and fan-servicy for milking TOS nostalgia for maximum effect.
You might be on to something with the nostalgia milking. I just think it will run afoul canonistas, though perhaps not any worse than Burnham has.

I really don't understand why you have any doubts about its popularity. Sure, they can fuck up any concept, they can even fuck up the Picard series, but as a premise Captain Pike and the Enterpise is a super safe bet.

Short answer... yes. I think the problem is if you have Pike on the Enterprise its just about as classic Star Trek as you can get and I am not sure there is room for another show right now.
They COULD scrap the proposed Section 31 show. Honestly, not sure why that would be so hard, and more people are wanting a Pike show than Section 31. Plus it seems like Section 31 is going to be buried at the end of the season, so makes no sense why they would push on with that show.

I don't care what writers want. I care what I want. Mount has charisma. Unlike . . . never mind, I'm keepin 'er positive here.

And it could have some arc or something. (Though I, for one, would welcome an episodic Trek again.) It could be the faith and science season DSC was gonna be this season before the meanies got fired. Pike was interesting in that regard.

As a concept, I completely agree. As a fan of Pike since way back, I absolutely want it. I want the uniforms and the design aesthetic, laser pistols and all.

However, right now, in terms of buzz and appeal, I see it has wanting less of Discovery and more nostalgia. Call me cynical, but I am skeptical that it can carry a whole series. I hope I can be proven wrong on this one because I want more Pike.

It would need good stories and writing. I have somewhat been converted to the Spock-Burnham and Culber-Stamets arcs because they are about interesting human relationship issues. I like sci-fi what ifs and dilemmas and social commentary usually. But, yeah, in other lit I like human issues.

So it can't be a nostalgia thing, yeah. Good characters well-acted. Good stories. Why I'm liking DSC 2 way more than 1. So Pike/Ent can work. Make Michael Chabon the writing-producer like Coon was in TOS and take it to the bank.

If it's that then more power to it and full speed ahead.

Yes, ever since I saw "The Cage" I have wanted to see the Captain Pike years on the Enterprise.

At this juncture, I think we might see Anson Mount again as Pike. Starfleet Academy series is in development. Pike might become a teacher or Academy Head whom, sadly (per TOS), is critically injured by radiation exposure trying to save cadets on a training mission. Folks seem to really like Mount's Pike, would bring some existing audience to a new series.... YMMV

Michelle Yeoh is wonderful and the Star Trek franchise is lucky to have her wanting to do/be a lead in a series for them.

This is true. Mirror Georgiou however is a terrible caricature character and S31 is an awful concept. They shouldn't have killed the real Georgiou.

If she is actually mellowing a bit; could be a nice development, that a person is not fated to be horrible. Circumstances and choices matter. This was a big theme of ST '09 iirc..

Let's examine it by assuming all of it is real for a moment AND assuming people are not "born evil".

  1. Georgiou is a product of her natural, social, and cultural environments.
  2. The natural environment seems to be different solely regarding sensitivity to light (and that has seemingly been abandoned).
  3. Her social environment was living in a rarified elite circumstance entirely designed to place her above everyone else.
  4. Her cultural environment was one with a "moral compass" tuned to the opposite of what are considered civilized values in the "prime Trek" universe--reinforced by being the ultimate beneficiary of both the values and social circumstances under which she spent her entire life, minus a few months in her new circumstances.
  5. As heinous as her values and actions were from a Federation perspective, the circumstances of her arrival, coupled with a lack of legal jurisdiction applicable to her, made a more traditional "punishment" for her quite problematic (were it only her actions, legal precedents for punishment could likely apply--as they do in international courts today--but added to the stated policy of keeping the "Terran Universe" completely secret, I see no above board way to put her on trial while simultaneously respecting all the rights due to any accused in a proper justice system).
  6. Is it not possible, therefore, for Emperor Georgiou to slowly, haltingly, perhaps painfully, make a transition towards some form of rehabilitation?
Just something to think about (or not).

I would absolutely love a Pike series... but only after DSC finishes its run, as I really love this show too and wouldn't want to see it get completely overshadowed (as it almost certainly would).

Although I suppose one possibility would be to have the Discovery get destroyed at the end of next season, and then fold some of its characters into a Pike series. So that way you could still enjoy great characters like Saru, Burnham and Tilly, but serving on a much cooler ship like Enterprise with Pike as Captain.

Hell, you could probably even keep calling it Star Trek: Discovery, since it could just as easily represent the Ent's mission.

Once I read it's stars people go to see movies for. I'm only watching DSC b/c it's the latest Trek, but a Mount/Pike Peck/Spock show I'd be enthused about. Romijn prob too big for a series?
